Job summary

CSU Monterey Bay invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History. The successful candidate will teach United States history from early America to the present, contribute to the launch of a new History major in Fall 2027, and engage in undergraduate mentoring and scholarly activity.

We value interdisciplinary collaboration across Global Studies, Sociology, and other social sciences, and expect a candidate who can teach in-person and online modalities.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in History by the time of appointment from an accredited doctoral program.

• Evidence of a clear, feasible plan for a sustained research agenda.

The Department of Social Sciences and Global Studies, housed in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Science (CAHSS) , invites candidates to apply for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the field of History. We are seeking a historian committed to undergraduate teaching, active scholarship, and professional service. The successful candidate should have the ability to teach United States/American history from early America to the present.

This position will support our new History major, set to launch in Fall 2027. We are looking for a candidate who is capable of engaging our diverse student population in historical analysis and application, including student research. We seek a colleague who is excited to collaborate across disciplines as we add this new major to our department’s existing offerings in Global Studies, Sociology, and interdisciplinary Social Sciences. The successful applicant will teach 12 units per semester in courses covering United States history and other courses in History or interdisciplinary social sciences. Teaching responsibilities may include a combination of in-person and online modalities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teach lower- and upper-division courses in modern United States history
• Willingness to teach other history and social science courses as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ph.D. in History by the time of appointment from an accredited doctoral program
• Experience working effectively in an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community
• Demonstrated success in teaching United States/American history to a diverse undergraduate population
• Demonstrated potential or evidence of successful research, scholarly publication, and/or creative activities
• Evidence of a clear, feasible plan for a sustained research agenda

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience teaching both in-person and synchronous online courses
• Experience working in an interdisciplinary academic department
• Experience teaching interdisciplinary social science theory and/or research methods
• Experience teaching Political Science, and/or relevant expertise to teach Political Science courses
• Experience serving on departmental and/or college-level committees
• Experience strengthening outreach, recruitment, and retention of diverse student populations
• Experience mentoring diverse students in undergraduate research, service learning, community engagement, internship, study abroad, and other high-impact educational practices
• Experience providing community service relevant to the candidate’s scholarly interests

COMPENSATION:

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $7,108 to $7,707* mo ($85,301 to $92,484 annual)
