Job description

The English and Modern Languages department at Jackson State University is accepting applications for Assistant Professor of Creative Writing.

• Duties of the position include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, including workshops; directing undergraduate and graduate theses; advising undergraduate and graduate students; and contributing to the creative and intellectual life of the department through individual and collaborative initiatives.

• Candidates must be capable of teaching a range of courses: workshops, literary subject areas, general education courses.

• Courses may be taught at the undergraduate and graduate level.

• A standard semester teaching load is 4 undergraduate courses or 2 undergraduate and 1 graduate course.

• The ideal candidate demonstrates experience and versatility in inclusive pedagogy.

• We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to creating a more equitable global society that supports diverse cultural experiences through their teaching, research, and service.

• Selected candidate will maintain an active research and publishing agenda.

• Candidate will also be required to perform departmental and university committee service, attend in-person meetings and events (i.e. commencement), and maintain a schedule for professional development.

• Terminal degree (MFA/PhD) in English/Creative Writing or other relevant discipline by date of appointment

• Relevant teaching experience at the college level, which can include GTA experience (2 years minimum) Proven publishing experience in peer-reviewed publications (academic and/or creative writing)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficient in more than one genre (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, and/or hybrid/multimodal).

• Experience with digital writing, digital humanities, artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, or innovative approaches to creative writing pedagogy and practice.
