Job Summary

The Medical College of Georgia Department of Surgery at Augusta University is seeking a full-time a faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor who will serve as a Colorectal Surgeon. The faculty member will support the development and growth of a comprehensive colorectal surgery program serving Wellstar MCG Health at its main campus and Columbia County Medical Center. The position will provide clinical care for patients with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign colorectal conditions while contributing to resident education, multidisciplinary collaboration, research, community outreach, and the continued development of the division. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.

Responsibilities

Clinical:

Provide comprehensive surgical care for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign colorectal conditions.

Develop and maintain an annual clinical volume of approximately:

• -150 inpatient surgical cases
• -300 outpatient procedures, including endoscopy
• -500 new patient visits

Participate in approximately two operating room days, one full clinic day, and one-half day of endoscopy each week.

Participate in the division's robotic surgery schedule and help advance minimally invasive and robotic colorectal surgery.

Provide colorectal surgery call coverage, with a target frequency of no more than one week per month.

Participate in multidisciplinary colorectal cancer clinics and conferences, including the management of locally advanced, metastatic, and early-onset colorectal cancer.

Support the development of additional multidisciplinary programs for inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders, and other benign colorectal conditions.

Build relationships with community gastroenterology and oncology practices to support referrals and coordinated patient care.

Teaching:

Teach and supervise medical students and surgical residents across clinical sites.

Participate in resident conferences, case reviews, morbidity and mortality discussions, journal clubs, simulation activities, and instruction in endoscopy and robotic surgery.

Research:

Collaborate with Surgical Oncology, the Georgia Cancer Center, and other institutional partners on clinical outcomes, quality improvement, translational, and early-onset colorectal cancer research.

Participate in established research meetings and forums and contribute to presentations, publications, and future development of an independent colorectal research program.

Service:

Support community service and outreach activities related to colorectal cancer awareness, prevention, and access to care.

Contribute to divisional program development, including referral pathways, educational programming, website content, quality initiatives, and long-term strategic growth.

Required Qualifications

MD, DO or equivalent from an accredited institution. Must be able to obtain a Georgia Medical License. Board certified or board eligible in surgery.

Assistant Professor: Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

• Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
• Evidence of ability as a teacher;
• Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
• Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
• Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

Surgical Oncology/Colorectal fellowship training and teaching experience at an academic medical center.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

Assistant Professor: Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
