The Department of Art & Art History empowers students to expand their vision through study and practice in Art, Design, Art History, and Art Education. We foster innovative studio practices, scholarship, and arts-based teaching, affirming that art and visual culture are essential to our students, university, communities, and future. The Department currently offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Graphic Design, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art and Art Education, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Art with six concentrations, along with a minor in Art History and an Honors Program in Art History. Additionally, the Department contributes to the University General Education curriculum.

The Art Education concentration prepares teacher candidates to earn their NC licensure in Art K-12 through a rigorous professional curriculum with content and pedagogy that fosters a love of teaching and learning. The Art Education concentration seeks a colleague to enhance and advance the department's record of innovation through dynamic, engaged teaching, impactful research, and visionary, collegial leadership and service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Art & Art History is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Art Education. The successful candidate will be an educator, artist, and researcher who will contribute to growing the Art & Art History Department's B.A. in Art, concentration in Art Education and its Graduate Certificate in Education, concentration in Art Education.

Teaching: The successful candidate will design, revise, and teach art education theory and methods courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Assistant Professor of Art Education will be assigned a 3/2 teaching load, encompassing a broad range of courses that include online and face-to-face classes, as well as supervision and observation of student teachers.

Research: Successful candidates will demonstrate an active and ongoing research agenda in the field of art education that is disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, funding, community projects, and/or exhibitions.

Service: The successful candidate will serve as the Area Coordinator for Art Education, contributing to the ongoing development of the Art Education concentrations through curriculum revision, student mentoring, and assessment. They will serve as a liaison with the Cato College of Education and serve on Department, College, and University committees.

Starts August 16, 2027. Salary and start up package commensurate with qualifications. The nine-month contract includes 5 courses per year (3/2 course load) with potential for summer teaching for additional compensation. Hiring is subject to budget availability.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:

• A terminal degree (PhD or EdD) in Art Education or related field from an accredited institution of higher education is required and must be conferred by August 2027.
• Eligible to meet state licensure requirements for teachers, Art K-12
• Prior experience teaching in an Art Education college/university curriculum.
• Demonstrated commitment to working with K-12 schools with a minimum of three school years of successful Visual Arts teaching in K-12 settings
• Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of contemporary issues in education, contemporary art and art history, classroom teaching as both practice and research, technology, and student assessments to support teaching.
• Demonstrated ability to implement a peer-reviewed research agenda in art education through scholarly publications; regional, national, and/or international presentations; peer reviewed exhibitions; research funding; and/or community-based creative projects.
• A track record of effective leadership and communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to work supportively and collaboratively as part of a professional learning community that encompasses students, colleagues, and community partners.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to the profession of Art Education on the local/regional, state, national, and/or international level through involvement with community organizations, professional networks (NAEA, InSEA, etc.), and/or academic journals (ie. as a peer reviewer).

Additional Desired Qualifications:

• A BFA, MA, or MFA degree in Studio Art from an accredited institution of higher education.
• Experience supporting teacher candidates in practicum and clinical settings, including student teaching.
• Experience supporting teacher candidates through assessment processes using established instruments, including edTPA and CPAST.
• Demonstrated ability to apply state and national standards governing teacher education programs and teacher licensure to candidate assessment and/or program development.
• Established research agenda in art education with significant accomplishments in publications, presentations, exhibitions, research funding, and/or community-based creative projects.
• Demonstrated ability to serve in shared governance of college/university policy and procedure (i.e., committee work).
• Demonstrated ability to develop college-level curriculum and/or conduct assessment reviews at the college level.
