The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (APLA) at Auburn University, a comprehensive land-grant and research institution, invites applications for four tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Architecture centered on teaching design studio and seminar/lecture courses commencing August 2027.
For more than 118 years, APLA has educated designers across a range of allied fields while contributing to the region and the design professions through scholarship, creative practice, outreach, and community-engaged design. In addition to the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design, APLA offers the Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Science in Architecture, Bachelor of Interior Architecture, Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, and Master of Landscape Architecture. The school’s commitment to public-interest design is exemplified by its two off-campus centers, Rural Studio in Hale County, Alabama, and Urban Studio in Birmingham, Alabama. As part of Auburn University's College of Architecture, Design and Construction, APLA works alongside the McWhorter School of Building Science and the School of Industrial + Graphic Design to prepare future leaders in design and construction while fostering collaboration across the School, College, and broader University.
Auburn’s Architecture program engages design as cultural, social, technical, and environmental practice, preparing students to address the challenges and opportunities shaping the built environment. Through an integrated curriculum of design, history and theory, technology, and professional practice, students develop the ability to think critically across scalles, from building and cities to communities and regions. The program encourages collaboration with allied fields throughout the college and university fostering shared approaches to comples spatial, ecological, and societal questions. Through design studios, seminars, hands‑on making, and research-based learning, students build the creative, analytical, and technical skills necessary for contemporary practice. Grounded in both experimentation and professional preparation, the program equips graduates to lead across varied modes of practice and to contribute to the future of the build environment.
The Architecture program seeks candidates whose design research/practice is rooted in architectural innovation. We welcome candidates engaged in a range of progressive practices or scholarship in architecture and allied fields. Applicants are expected to teach, conduct research/lead creative activity that contributes to or challenges current architectural thinking. The successful candidate will demonstrate how design can synthesize contemporary issues and disciplinary knowledge to cultivate students’ architectural sensibilities, particularly in the design of buildings. We seek individuals who bring a strong design portfolio, a commitment to teaching excellence, and a clear vision for how architecture can engage with urgent disciplinary questions. The Architecture program seeks to fill four positions with teaching responsibilities to include design studio and seminars/lecture courses in one of the following areas of expertise: visual communication, representation, and design media; history and theory of architecture; and building technology, material innovation, and fabrication.
The primary responsibilities of the appointment include teaching, research, and service. Candidates will be expected to develop and maintain an active program of scholarly and/or creative work within the discipline. APLA is particularly interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence of the academic community through their teaching, research, outreach, and service. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Candidates must hold a PhD, Master of Architecture, Master of Science in Architecture, or a Bachelor of Architecture plus a terminal degree in a related field, at the time employment begins.
