FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Position Details

The Grove School of Engineering at The City University of New York – City College is seeking highly qualified candidates for an Assistant Professor position to develop and conduct research in thermal-hydraulics associated with innovative Energy Systems such as Advanced Reactor Technologies. It is anticipated that the appointment will begin in Fall 2027.

The position will form part of the core faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department and will be affiliated with the CUNY Energy Institute. The Department has active research programs in Energy, Thermal-Hydraulics of Advanced Nuclear Reactors, Advanced Materials, and Mechatronics. The faculty member for this position will be expected to enhance the existing research components and develop new areas of research, especially in the field of thermal-hydraulics involving innovative heat transfer/transport technologies.

The CUNY Energy Institute ( https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/energy ) has ongoing, active, and highly funded research programs in energy storage, nuclear energy, and the oil/gas/water nexus. The Thermal-Hydraulics Laboratory has advanced experimental facilities, including a High-Pressure/High-Temperature Helium Flow Loop, Natural Circulation Test Facility, Reactor Cavity Test Facility, Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow Loop, Boiling Flow Loop, and various diagnostic equipment such as PIV and PTV systems, Electrical Impedance Tomography, an X-ray imaging system, a Gamma densitometer, Wire-mesh sensors, Laser Focus Displacement Sensors, and high-speed video cameras. The existing infrastructure directly supports the research priorities of federal funding agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), ARPA-E, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Early-career faculty will benefit from a research ecosystem already engaged with the DOE, NSF, ARPA-E, and NRC; access to major experimental infrastructure for advanced reactor research without long setup delays; a department with established strengths in energy systems, advanced materials, and mechatronics; and strong institutional support for proposal development and multi-PI collaborations.

The candidate is expected to participate in the teaching and development of undergraduate and graduate courses in the Mechanical Engineering Department, and also contribute to the Nuclear Engineering Concentration program, which was established in 2010 and has been offering courses in Reactor Thermal-Hydraulics, Reactor Physics, and Reactor Design, Operation, and Safety.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is required.

Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarly achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications

Successful candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and the ability to attract significant research funding.
