Job description

The Department of Biology at Stanford University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Evolutionary Biology. A successful candidate will conduct research that asks fundamental questions relating to evolutionary processes and drivers of evolutionary patterns. Candidates can make use of any of the major techniques of evolutionary biology, including computational, experimental, field, mathematical, statistical, or theoretical methods, or any combination thereof. Conceptual and mathematical research or research involving any species will be considered. The successful candidate’s research will answer broad questions about evolutionary processes and principles using specific models and/or systems.

Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring and the ability to build and maintain a world‑class research program. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field at the time of appointment and will be expected to teach and advise students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The term of appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2027.

The nine‑month salary range for this position is $136,454 - $162,039 for the academic year 2026–2027.

Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position upon hire. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity.
