Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of Sustainable Technology & the Built Environment (STBE) houses three academic programs: the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Renewable Energy Technology; the BS in Building Sciences, with two concentrations; and the Master of Science in Technology. The Department includes more than 35 full-time faculty serving approximately 950 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. STBE has played an integral role in building the University's sustainability agenda, which features prominently in the University's Strategic Plan. Within STBE, faculty exemplify a commitment to applied research and interdisciplinary, experiential learning. Students in these programs have achieved notable successes in national and international competitions such as the Formula Sun Grand Prix and American Solar Challenge, the USDOE Race to Zero and Solar Decathlon, Solar Decathlon Europe, and the US EPA P3 program, among others.

The Building Sciences Program is structured to establish a broad set of foundational skills and knowledge related to the whole life cycle of the built environment, including design, construction, and operations. This foundation acts as a catalyst for growth and success in our graduates' careers. Extending beyond foundational principles, the program is committed to priming students' minds to deconstruct, organize, and solve a wide range of problems related to the built environment in a team-based setting. Students go on to career paths in architecture, construction, building performance assessment, and facilities management.

The College of Fine and Applied Arts (CFAA) at Appalachian State University is a dynamic, transdisciplinary academic unit that emphasizes experiential learning and offers 30 undergraduate degree programs, one graduate degree program and 13 minors through its seven member departments: Applied Design; Art; Communication; Military Science and Leadership; Sustainable Development; Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment; and Theatre and Dance (https://cfaa.appstate.edu/).
