Job summary

Capella University is seeking Assistant Professors to join our full‑time faculty delivering high‑quality online education across degree, certificate, and non‑degree programs. Qualifications

  • Three or more years teaching in an online setting highly preferred.
  • Experience teaching in higher education required.
  • Experience mentoring doctoral students highly preferred.
  • Experience writing curriculum highly preferred.
  • Experience presenting at national and/or local professional conferences.
  • Doctorate degree from a regionally accredited institution is required.

Job description

Assistant Professors are full‑time employed faculty who provide a variety of educational services to degree, certificate, and non‑degree learners. Assistant Professors are responsible for meeting the expectations and requirements of Capella University while establishing and maintaining effective relationships with learners, colleagues, staff, and administration. Assistant Professors are able to perform well in all key accountabilities of the role, are nimble and flexible and expected to be able and willing to take on essential roles and other duties as needed within the department, school or university. Assistant Professors ensure that learners receive quality educational experiences consistent with stated course outcomes as well as HLC and any program accreditation standards. They provide high‑quality, impactful, and inclusive experiences that deliver exceptional learning outcomes. Capella values the scholarly‑practitioner model and expects Assistant Professors to continue learning and development through participation in scholarly activities or professional practice in the discipline.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teaching and Instruction – highly engaged instructors in the courses and residencies they teach. Use course data to constantly improve individual teaching performance, review course feedback, and implement changes to strengthen performance and enhance learner experience.
  • Doctoral Mentoring – knowledgeable about dissertation and capstone processes, chairing and serving on doctoral committees, and facilitating interactive dissertation and capstone course‑rooms to support timely completion of the dissertation or capstone product.
  • Curriculum and Course Development – knowledgeable in the Capella course development process, collaborating with cross‑functional partners to design, deliver, and continuously improve high‑quality courses and curriculum, ensuring sensitivity, diversity, and inclusiveness in course content.
  • School and University Governance – routinely assume committee roles as active participants, drive positive impact of governance structures, and serve as peer mentors.
  • Professional Service and Practice – contribute professional knowledge and skills to local communities and professional networks, carrying the Capella Brand and mission, engaging in research and scholarship, and staying current in scholarly fields.
  • Leadership through Team Engagement – take on essential roles and other duties as needed, contribute to departmental leadership, and support specialized assignments such as faculty development, problem resolution, or course revisions.
  • Areas of Emphasis – may include specialized responsibilities or coordinating functions in support of the school's educational goals such as Learner Management, Research and Advising, Program Development, Field Education, Accreditation, or B2B partnership efforts, based on school needs and faculty capabilities.

  • Understand and apply Capella’s competency‑based education model to align program outcomes, competencies, assessments, and reports.
  • Convey content knowledge and relevant professional experience, facilitating learner acquisition of course and/or research competencies.
  • Consider learner differences and appreciate the diversity of experience among learners.
  • Assess and document learner knowledge, skills, and dispositions through formative and summative feedback, monitoring progress and referring learners to additional resources.
  • Display cultural awareness and sensitivity to learner differences, providing personalized support.
  • Engage learners in effective, timely, and relevant interactions, cultivating a learning community of trust and interaction.
  • Manage key online course processes and tools, maintaining a timely, visible, consistent, and responsive presence.
  • Encourage learner engagement consistent with the learner code of conduct and support free exchange of ideas.
Research and Scholarship
  • Apply innovative teaching methods that can be empirically validated for learner success.
  • Submit proposals and present at workshops or conferences.
  • Showcase original or innovative work or exhibitions.
  • Maintain an active research agenda, attend professional development events, attain continuing education credits, and pursue additional credentials.
  • Publish papers at industry‑recognized channels.
Professional Service and Practice
  • Career and well‑being advising, leading student organizations, and guidance on learning outside the course room.
  • Support institutional activities with external audiences (e.g., presentations for employer partners, job fairs).
  • Leadership in professional associations, advocacy for the advancement of the profession, and organization of professional conferences.
  • Volunteer in community events, sharing knowledge and expertise with the public.
Governance and Leadership
  • Active participation in program, department, school, or university committees to advance strategic direction.
  • Attend faculty development events and share best practices.
  • Serve as subject‑matter experts in course and program development and support accreditation efforts.
  • Identify and coordinate proactive management of curriculum content quality and currency.
  • Take on additional, challenging projects to support learner success.
  • Provide mentorship, feedback, and guidance to other faculty members.
Performance Criteria
  • Satisfactory performance of teaching and/or mentoring activities based on university faculty expectations, reviewed annually.
Work Experience
  • Three or more years teaching in an online setting highly preferred.
  • Experience teaching in higher education required.
  • Experience mentoring doctoral students highly preferred.
  • Experience writing curriculum highly preferred.
  • Membership/affiliation in an educational leadership organization at a national, regional, or local level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to service and practice in educational leadership.
  • Experience with team‑engagement leadership.
  • Evidence of supporting learner success and commitment to quality teaching outcomes.
  • Ability to contribute to diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.
  • Experience presenting at national and/or local professional conferences.
  • Experience in scholarly writing and use of APA 6th edition.
Education
  • Doctorate degree required.
  • All degrees must be conferred and from a regionally accredited institution.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • Must be a BCBA, BCBA‑D preferred.
Other Requirements
  • Must be able to travel occasionally if a business need arises; travel will not be common for most roles.
  • Must be able to work onsite in a corporate or campus location if required; may be mobile within office environments.
  • For off‑site or hybrid roles, must have access to a setting that enables meeting all requirements (privacy, reliable internet, phone, video conferencing).
  • Faculty and Federal Work Study roles require reliable remote work capabilities.

Applicants

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Compensation

Expected starting pay is $82,000. The offering is based on current budgetary guidelines and additional factors. Salary range for this position is $67,700 – $101,500.
