Job summary

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center seeks a diagnostic hematopathologist to assume patient care responsibilities in Hematopathology.

Responsibilities include interpretation of bone marrow and lymph node specimens, reporting and consulting, and teaching of fellows and residents; licensed in Texas and board certified (or eligible); collaboration in research with internal and external investigators.

Job description

Primary Function(s)

To assume diagnostic patient care responsibilities in the Department of Hematopathology in the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine by serving as a diagnostic hematopathologist.

Essential Functions
Patient Care
  • Must be a self‑motivated, highly energetic, committed, and conscientious professional who communicates (verbal and written) and relates well to others at the professional, technical, and administrative levels.
  • Must be able to visually review, evaluate and correctly interpret medical records, patient data, patient specimens and other test results based on previous training, experience and knowledge.
  • Must be able to visually identify specimen make‑up, contents and/or components viewed through a microscope and integrate this information into diagnostic and biologically relevant information.
  • Must be able to visually read staging reactions on slides, and be familiar with immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, histograms, and image analysis systems.
  • Must be able to comprehend relevance of printed results and correlate patient data with research findings.
  • Must be able to ensure that Quality Control standards are implemented and that the laboratory in which he/she is working complies with the CAP, JCAHO, FDA, Medicare, and CLIA regulations for accreditation.
  • Must be able to relate quality control result data to unknown analyzed data assuring that appropriate action is taken based on results obtained.
  • Must be able to identify and solve problems related to job responsibilities utilizing knowledge and experience.
  • Must be able to work with radioisotopes, chemical carcinogens, organic compounds, and biohazardous materials exercising appropriate cautions.
  • Must be acquainted with tissue culture procedures, molecular biologic techniques, and sophisticated equipment.
  • Must have manual dexterity for various functions with instruments used in diagnosis and research.
  • Must be able to move from one laboratory to another.
Administrative
  • Must assure compliance with standards of CAP, JCAHO, FDA, Medicare, and CLIA.
  • Must give theoretical guidance and technical assistance to laboratory personnel.
  • Must be able to interview applicants, evaluate laboratory personnel on their job performance, and make hiring, termination, promotional and merit recommendations.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge in the field of Hematopathology and Laboratory Medicine in general.
  • Interpretation, reporting and consulting of bone marrow and lymph node specimens of hematological malignancies.
Research and Development
  • Must show commitment to the clinical and applied aspects of hematopathology.
  • Must be able to collaborate with other investigators at MDACC and outside this institution.
  • Must be able to design, execute, interpret, and integrate scientific data for publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
Education
  • Must be able to present lectures using visual aids to faculty, fellows, and technical personnel.
  • Must be able to train fellows, post‑doctoral fellows, medical students, technologists, medical technology students and laboratory personnel.
Incumbent compliance

Incumbent complies with all policies and procedures.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Doctorate‑level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and department mission. Licensed to practice in Texas. Board Certified or obtain within the department's timeline.
  • Experience: At least 2 years' experience as Instructor or at least 5 years' experience post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist or GME trainee.
  • Appropriate post medical doctoral training per discipline.
