Job Description

Assistant Principal – High School

Reports to: Principal

Exempt Status: Exempt (Approved by Board Order #78, 2-10-15)

Summary: Under professional direction, to assist in the administration of a secondary school facility and to plan, develop, organize, coordinate, and supervise student attendance, behavior management, counseling and guidance, site safety and security, and extracurricular activities. Also to assist in planning, implementing site, instructional, and operational goals, and evaluating effectiveness of educational programs and personnel performance.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Requires subject matter expertise in educational programs, curriculum and instruction strategies, and direct administrative experience. The position involves analytical problem solving, decision making with critical impact, supervising professional staff, motivating and monitoring result objectives, and occasional walking/standing.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning, developing, organizing, coordinating, and supervising instructional programs and activities (curriculum development, program delivery, and design).
  • Conduct need assessments, feasibility planning, and other research and development functions.
  • Advise, counsel, and assist instructional and support personnel in problem solving for student behavior management and alternative solutions.
  • Review, audit, and evaluate student attendance processes and recommend procedural revisions.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate campus supervision, activities, and student supervision/control programs.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating instructional support programs including pupil services, materials development, storage, and retrieval systems.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct a comprehensive student body activity program (co-curricular activities, budget planning, expenditure control, student government functions).
  • Serve as liaison to public safety and youth service agencies for student management and welfare problems.
  • Assist in site budget planning and expenditure control.
  • Review, audit, and evaluate instructional and non‑instructional personnel performance and provide technical evaluation input.
  • Assist in planning, developing, and organizing District and site advisory committees and groups.
  • Work closely with the athletic director on student eligibility and coaching assignments.
  • Assist in developing and implementing staff motivational strategies and professional growth activities.
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods, strategies, goals, and objectives of public education.
  • Philosophical, educational, fiscal, and legal aspects of public education.
  • Procedures, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to the administration of a secondary school.
  • Curriculum, instruction, and pupil service trends, strategies, and techniques.
  • Student activity, behavior management, and campus supervision and control methods.
  • Program and activity auditing and evaluation strategies.
  • Supervision of instructional and student body related activities and programs.

Ability to:

  • Effectively plan, organize, and coordinate the management functions of a secondary school.
  • Demonstrate a positive instructional leadership model.
  • Analyze problems, formulate alternative solutions.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Understand and carry out oral/written directions with minimal accountability controls.
  • Establish and maintain effective organizational, public, and community relationships.
Experience and Education
  • Four (4) years of successful secondary school teaching experience and completion of an administrative internship program.
  • Experience in secondary school administration.
  • Master’s degree (or higher) in educational administration, instructional technology, or related field from an accredited university.
  • Certification as required by Kentucky law.
