POSITION TITLE

Elementary School Assistant Principal

JOB DESCRIPTION

Assist the principal in providing leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills which promote an environment conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supports the principal in creating a culture of excellence, teamwork and collaboration among the staff, teachers, students and families.
  • Supports the principal in fostering a school climate that supports both student and staff success and promotes respect and appreciation for all students, staff and parents.
  • Supports the principal in building a common vision for high expectations, student performance, and school improvement with staff.
  • Assists the principal in the overall administration of the school and serves as a principal in the absence of the regular principal.
  • Maintains a high degree of visibility throughout the entire school site particularly before school, after school, during student lunch hours, and during break periods between classes.
  • Articulates the school’s mission to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.
  • Works cooperatively with and maintains professional relationships with school system employees, serving as a role model in appearance and conduct.
  • Supervises teachers and departments and conducts staff walkthroughs and evaluations as assigned by the Principal.
  • Coaches and collaborates with teachers to increase student learning.
  • Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance and follows up with appropriate action.
  • Coordinates in-school suspension program for grades six through eight.
  • Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the student body, deals with special cases, and works with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.
  • Assists in safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  • Supervises lunch duty personnel.
  • Monitors plant and personnel safety including the security of all plant buildings and equipment.
  • Attends activities and functions at school and throughout the community to ensure good community relations.
  • Meets with Principal regularly to establish immediate priorities and daily plan of action.
  • Take a leadership role in planning and scheduling of daily school activities including the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.
  • Oversee reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with staff to identify and address issues.
  • Initiates parental communications as needed and coordinates communications with instructors and other staff members regarding school issues.
  • Develops knowledge of school office procedures, School District protocol, Board of Education policies, administrative rules and regulations, building and District handbooks, and day-to-day operations of the School District.
  • Attends administrative meetings and staff meetings as designated by the Principal.
  • Maintains current administrative license credential on file with District Department of Human Resources.
  • Performs other duties and assignments as designated by the Principal.
  • Adheres to all health, safety, and sanitation policies of the School District and notifies the proper authorities when repairs or replacements are required in order to maintain established standards.
  • Assists at other duty stations if requested by the Principal.
  • Performs the job task requirements determined for this position.
  • Regular and predictable physical attendance in the workplace.
  • Complies with all District Customer Service policies and procedures.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE
  • New Mexico Administrative License or eligibility.
  • Master’s Degree with hours in Education Administration.
  • Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience.
  • Assistant Principal or Instructional Coach experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and instruction.
  • Evidence of leadership ability necessary for improvement of instruction.
  • Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness.
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel.
  • Ability to implement policy and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret data.
  • Knowledge of special programs including Special Education and Title I.
  • Demonstrated communication and public relations skills.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions and job task requirements.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Ability to comply with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and, upon an offer of employment, complete an Employee’s Statement of Health and submit to a functional capacity evaluation at the District’s expense to determine ability to perform job-related functions and fitness for duty. Any offer of employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of all background, criminal, and reference investigations.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Principal in accordance with provisions of the APS Administrator Evaluation Plan.
