Job description

We are a thriving nonprofit network of free, public charter schools open to all students. At KIPP, we believe all children should grow up free to create the future they want for themselves and that schools can and should be a critical factor in making that vision a reality. Together with families and communities, we create joyful, academically excellent schools that prepare students with the skills and confidence to pursue the paths they choose—college, career, and beyond—so they can lead fulfilling lives and build a more just world.

Our 7,000+ elementary, middle, and high school students across East Palo Alto, Oakland, San Francisco, San Lorenzo, San José, Redwood City, and Stockton represent the rich diversity of our region. We strive to build a team of educators whose backgrounds and experiences reflect those of our students and families.

Role Overview

The Assistant Principal advances student achievement and supports a joyful, inclusive school community by strengthening teacher instructional practice through coaching, feedback, and professional development. Reporting to the School Leader, the Assistant Principal leads instructional improvement within assigned grades or departments and shares responsibility for implementing effective school culture and student support systems. As a member of the school leadership team, the Assistant Principal develops the leadership skills and experience needed to prepare for future school leadership opportunities.

Core Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership and Student Achievement

Lead instructional improvement efforts within assigned grades or departments, aligning teaching practices and student learning goals with the school's academic priorities.

Analyze student achievement and assessment data with teachers to identify learning gaps, establish instructional priorities, and implement targeted strategies that improve student mastery.

Monitor instructional progress and student learning outcomes, identifying opportunities for timely adjustments to teaching practices and instructional supports.

Teacher Coaching and Professional Development

Provide consistent, high-quality instructional coaching through classroom observations, actionable feedback, collaborative planning, and follow-up that improves teacher practice.

Develop teachers' ability to use student work, assessment results, and classroom evidence to make effective instructional decisions.

Partner with the School Leader to identify teacher development priorities and recommend targeted professional learning opportunities that advance school-wide instructional goals.

School Culture and Student Support

Partner with the School Leader and school leadership team to implement a positive, inclusive, and academically focused school culture that supports student belonging, engagement, and achievement.

Coach teachers in effective classroom management, relationship-building, and student support practices to promote consistent and developmentally appropriate learning environments.

Collaborate with teachers, families, and student support staff to address student behavioral and social-emotional needs, ensuring timely interventions and consistent application of school expectations.

Contribute to the effective implementation of school routines and student-facing operations, including arrival, dismissal, transitions, and other assigned activities, to maintain a safe and productive learning environment.

Emerging Leader Development and Collaboration

Coach emerging teacher leaders, including grade-level and department leads, to strengthen their instructional leadership, facilitation, and peer coaching skills.

Partner with the School Leader to identify leadership development opportunities that build internal capacity and strengthen instructional practices across teams.

Facilitate collaboration among teachers and teacher leaders to establish shared instructional priorities, review student progress, and improve team effectiveness.

School Leadership and Strategic Execution

Collaborate with the School Leader and leadership team to translate school-wide academic and culture priorities into actionable goals and implementation plans for assigned grades or departments.

Monitor progress toward assigned instructional and culture goals, using evidence from student outcomes, teacher practice, and school systems to recommend improvements.
