THOMASVILLE CITY SCHOOLS JOB TITLE: Assistant Principal, 10.5 Months

JOB DESCRIPTION

Position is responsible for assisting the school principal in the planning, organization, administration, and management of an assigned secondary school with emphasis on improving the school’s instructional program. Position assists with supervising staff, creating a safe environment, monitoring curriculum, budget development, and other duties associated with the successful operation of a secondary school.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists the school principal in the general administration of the school with emphasis on improving the school’s instructional program.
  • The assistant principal assists in the development and establishing of the schools goals and objectives and the planning of the schools instructional program.
  • The assistant principal assists to provide direction to staff in implementing goals and objectives and interacts and meets with staff to assist in their development.
  • The assistant principal assists in the evaluation of the school program and of staff and assists to initiate needed improvements.
  • Assists with interpreting and enforcing all school board policies and administrative regulations.
  • The assistant principal communicates and carries out established policies, delegates and accepts responsibility for completion of tasks and communicates program goals, objectives and policies to the community.
  • The assistant Principal assists to define and disseminate information about school discipline policy and procedures to parents, students, staff and community.
  • Assists in developing, administering, and evaluating the school curriculum and instructional programs at the assigned school.
  • Develops the master schedule, and other schedules as requested, in collaboration with the principal.
  • The assistant principal assists to implement student orientation and registration activities.
  • Supervises, organizes, and gives leadership to an Instructional Support Team__composed of the school counselor, lead teachers, and other appropriate personnel__that is responsible for assessing students’ needs, removing barriers to learning, and articulating and modeling best practices.
  • The assistant principal acts to upgrade own professional knowledge and skills.
  • Implements and coordinates a process for involving staff in designing professional development activities to enhance the faculty’s skills in delivering quality work for students.
  • Uses participatory leadership strategies to develop, implement, and continuously improve the school’s instructional program designed to promote the engagement of students in quality work.
  • The assistant principal promotes and maintains open communications, positive student attitudes, respects dignity, worth of staff, students, and complies with established lines of authority.
  • Assists the school principal in the supervision and performance evaluation of staff assigned to the school.
  • The assistant principal assists in supervising and maintaining auxiliary services and uses community resources to supplement the school program
  • Performs classroom observations and conferences with teachers to improve the instructional program.
  • Provides leadership, resources, and support to instructional lead teachers and other teachers to enhance their ability to create quality work for students.
  • Collects data about student learning and involves teachers in analyzing the data and implementing results-oriented instructional planning.
  • The assistant principal assists in completion of records and reports and in the supervision and inventory of necessary supplies, textbooks, equipment and materials.
  • Attends and supervises evening and weekend school-sponsored events and activities and ensures a learning focus for such events and activities.
  • Assists in preparing and administering the school’s budget and finances. ? The assistant principal assists in the preparation and management of budgets and schedules and in the coordination and implementation of the co-curricular program. ? The assistant principal involves the staff in setting budget priorities.
  • Directs the implementation of the state and local testing program.
  • Coordinates the distribution and inventory of all textbooks.
  • Assists in the child study and eligibility process.
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports and records as assigned by the school principal.
  • Coordinates articulation efforts with feeder schools.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Assists the school principal with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for vacancies within the assigned school.
  • Initiates and maintains effective liaisons with professional societies to keep abreast of developments and research in the profession.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

MINIMUM TRAINING/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must possess a Master’s degree and be eligible for a North Carolina Postgraduate Professional License in administration and supervision
  • Must possess at least three years of successful experience as a teacher with some experience preferred at the school level
  • Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of the current issues, principles, and practices in public school education and the ability to apply them to the needs of a school.
  • Must possess knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development, instructional practices, interpretation of test data, and budget development
  • Must possess the ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of a school
  • Must possess the ability to plan and supervise the work of others
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public
