Job summary

Knife River is seeking a Transportation and Materials Helper to assist in coordinating activities of transportation and material-moving crews. The role supports loading/unloading, equipment operation, and safety compliance on a Monday–Friday schedule with occasional Saturday duties.

Responsibilities include planning work assignments, communicating with customers and supervisors, and ensuring compliance with DOT, MSHA, OSHA, and company policies while maintaining safe operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED (or equivalent).
  • 1–3 months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must meet OSHA respirator requirements (1910.134(g)(1)(i)) as tasks require.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities; able to work under time constraints.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with loading/unloading vehicles by hand or by operating heavy equipment and/or hand tools.
  • Compute or estimate transportation, personnel, or storage requirements.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

This position is responsible in assisting in coordinating activities of transportation and material-moving machine and plant helpers.

The typical schedule during Production is Monday -Friday 5:00 AM -4:00 PM. Saturdays are as needed. Typical schedule during Maintenance is Monday -Friday 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)
  1. Assist workers in tasks such as loading and unloading vehicles by hand or by operating heavy equipment and/or hand tools.
  2. Compute or estimate transportation, personnel, or storage requirements.
  3. Confer with customers, supervisors, contractors, or other personnel to exchange information or to resolve problems. Clear and effective communication skills are necessary.
  4. Direct workers in transportation or related services, such as moving, storing, or loading or unloading of materials. Provide instruction on safety and effectively completing the task.
  5. Drive vehicles or operate machines or equipment to complete work assignments or to assist workers in a safe and efficient manner while complying with all federal, state, local and company policies.
  6. Enforce safety rules and regulations (Federal, state, local and company policies.)
  7. Examine, measure, or weigh cargo or materials to determine specific handling requirements.
  8. Explain and demonstrate how to safely perform work tasks to new workers or assign training tasks to experienced workers.
  9. Inspect or test materials, stock, vehicles, equipment, or facilities to ensure that they are safe, free of defects, and consistent with specifications.
  10. Perform or schedule repairs or preventive maintenance of vehicles or other equipment. Sometimes performing these at elevated platforms with heavy tools.
  11. Plan work assignments and equipment allocations to meet transportation, operations, production and safety requirements.
  12. Prepare, compile, and submit reports on work activities, operations, production, or work-related accidents while utilizing computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.
  13. Recommend and implement measures to improve worker motivation, equipment performance, work methods, customer services and safety expectations.
  14. Recommend personnel actions, such as employee selection, evaluation, and safety improvements.
  15. Requisition needed personnel, supplies, equipment, parts, or repair services.
  16. Review orders, production schedules, or shipping or receiving notices to determine work sequences and material shipping dates, types, volumes, or destinations.
  17. Ensure DOT, MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
  18. Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITITES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)
  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Strong organizational skills.
  3. Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  4. Able to work independently and under time constraints.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)
  1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED);
  2. Or one to three months related experience and/or training;
  3. Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  4. Certain job tasks may require you to wear a half mask respirator in which you will need to meet the OSHA guidelines based on 1910.134(g)(1)(i).
COMPENSATION:

The starting pay starts at $24.85 and up, depending on experience.
