Job summary

Buncombe County is hiring an Assistant Planning Director in the Planning Department. The role involves leading strategic planning initiatives, supervising staff, and ensuring regulatory compliance across multiple divisions.

The position offers a range of benefits and remote options with in-office and hybrid arrangements. The candidate will collaborate with the Director, prepare annual operating and capital budgets, and engage with community partners and government agencies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related field and five (5) years of administrative experience in government or business including two (2) years of supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist the director with the implementation of long-range strategic plans, departmental goals, policies, procedures, and business practices.
• Provide leadership to management, professional, and support staff with direct and indirect supervision.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Monitor, interpret rules and develop data systems for effective support.
• Assist in preparation and implementation of department budgets; identify and manage funding from grants and partners.
• Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders; convene meetings and committees.
• Prepare and present reports to County leadership, boards, commissions, and other agencies.
• Respond to confidential inquiries and investigate complaints with the director and HR as necessary.
• Perform special projects within the department's area of responsibility.
