Job summary

DTE Energy is seeking candidates for substation operator roles in our energy network. The position involves maintenance, cleaning, and inspections under supervision, with progressive training in relay applications and station operation.

Successful applicants will complete the substation field training program and meet CAST requirements, with a valid driver's license and ability to work shifts, overtime, and travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or GED with math coursework.
  • Associate's degree in EE/engineering tech required; BS in EE preferred.
  • Minimum three years experience as Fuel Supply Equipment Operator or Power Plant Operator.

  • Study prints, attend formal classes, progressively learn operation of station/substation and relay applications.

Job Summary and Key Accountabilities
  • Under direct supervision of a Supervisor and frequently under the work direction of a Substation Operator, performs assigned maintenance and cleaning.
  • Assists with substation and station inspections and reports conditions to the organizational unit operating authority.
  • Studies prints, attends formal classes, progressively learns the operation of station and substation, learns relay applications.
  • Receives training and progressively learns to perform the duties of a Reserve Substation Operator.
  • Must satisfactorily complete the substation field training program.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have successfully completed one year of at least high school level Mathematics which include fundamentals of Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. Official documentation must be supplied with the job bid. Must have received a grade of a "C" or better in required courses.
  • An Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology from a recognized college or university
  • Must have a minimum of three years experience as a Fuel Supply Equipment Operator or Power Plant Operator including High and Medium Voltage Switching.
  • Satisfactory completion of two years of a four year Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Courses should include basic electrical power equipment and controls concepts/theory, electronics design concepts/theory, PC applications, and other related electrical applications and concepts. Documentation of courses and/or curriculum will be required prior to final selection.
  • Must obtain an evaluation of "Recommended" on the Construction Aptitude Skills Test (C.A.S.T.). (Exception: if you are incumbent and/or changing location, or have previously taken and passed the C.A.S.T.) A PRACTICE TEST CAN BE FOUND ON THE DTE WEBSITE AT WWW.DTEENERGY.COM.
  • Must be physically capable of handling equipment such as high voltage fuses, drawout switchgear, flexible jumpers and ladders.
  • Must be able to lift and carry substation materials and equipment weighing up to at least 50 pounds.
  • Satisfactory physical examination, including vision and hearing.
  • Must work shifts, on call and overtime as assigned.
  • Must be able to work in all inclement weather.
  • Valid driver's license and provide vehicle for travel on company time.
