Job description

Position Summary

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supervising personnel and coordinating the operational activities of a specific nursing unit, basing decision‑making on patient acuity, staff skills mix, and unit census for a 12‑hour work shift. The Assistant Nurse Manager directs the clinical nursing care for patients on the assigned unit, demonstrates effective leadership skills, directs and participates with the nursing care team in the delivery of quality nursing care in a safe environment, responds to nursing personnel requests for patient care assistance, and intervenes as an expert clinician when necessary to ensure quality patient outcomes and experience. The role also requires conducting board rounds on each patient to ensure that patient and family needs are met, managing the performance of unit personnel, and providing administrative and clinical support in the provision of quality patient care and sharing in the financial management of the unit. The Assistant Nurse Manager must maintain clinical competencies in the unit, providing direct patient care when necessary, perform all patient care and operational duties subject to reasonable accommodations, employ all mandatory safety devices and procedures, and participate in the Respiratory Protection Program, which may include wearing a respirator.

Education
  • Education required qualifying for license as a registered nurse.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or allied health field preferred. If not possessed, required to initiate a course of study toward a degree within 1 year of hire or transfer and complete the degree within 5 years of hire or transfer. All staff currently in this position must enroll in a course of study for a Bachelor's degree within 1 year and obtain it within 5 years of signing this job description.
Experience
  • One year in a charge/relief charge position preferred.
  • Minimum of two years relevant clinical experience in an acute care facility.
Licenses/Certificates
  • Current California Registered Nurse License.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification through AHA required.
  • Current National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification required.
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certificate through AHA required.
Additional Unit Specific Certification Requirements
  • Emergency, Pre‑Op, OR/PACU, and Endoscopy Department certifications.
Additional Skills
  • Basic knowledge of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to type and use a computer keyboard.
  • Ability to open and respond to emails.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact and work effectively with physicians, medical center leadership, clinicians, and vendors.
  • Strong analytical, time management, and organizational skills.
