Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) with a BSN to join our Med/Surg team. The role emphasizes patient‑centered care, staff mentorship, and continuous quality improvement.

Candidates should have at least 3 years of RN experience, hold an active Texas RN license with BLS, and be ready to collaborate across disciplines to ensure safe, efficient patient care and positive outcomes.

Qualifications

  • BSN from accredited nursing program.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor nursing staff; conduct rounds and chart audits to ensure quality of care.
  • Manage staffing to meet patient needs and productivity targets.
  • Collaborate with care teams to ensure safe delivery of care and compliance with standards.
  • Coordinate self-scheduling and Kronos timekeeping for unit coverage.
  • Support performance improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to staff and maintain confidential reporting.

Experience and Education
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program and BSN
Experience
  • 3 years experience as an RN
Licenses and Certifications
  • (RN) Registered Nurse
  • (BLS) Basic Life Support course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC)
  • (NLC) Nursing Licensure Compact‑BNE or current Texas license
Job Duties
  • Demonstrate continuous performance improvement in targeted areas of responsibility in alignment with the overall annual hospital performance improvement targets.
  • Meet or exceed financial goals and objectives of the department.
  • Directly supervise and evaluate the provision of patient care by other personnel assigned to the unit. Make daily patient rounds, conduct random chart audits, and utilize opportunities to teach and mentor nursing and ancillary personnel.
  • Manage staff to meet established productivity targets as appropriate. Review staffing/nursing assignments and revise as necessary to meet the specific needs of patients on a shift‑by‑shift basis. Coordinate staffing with the Central Staffing Office/House Supervisor and make ongoing changes to staffing as determined by fluctuations in census and patient acuity to assure safe delivery of care.
  • Role model pro‑active problem solving by collaborating with staff to ensure effective resolution of identified issues. Utilize the chain of command for unresolved or escalating issues and advocate for patients and staff to provide a safe delivery of care and a safe environment.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to provide coverage during shifts when staffing crises or shortages occur.
  • Provide timely, confidential coaching and/or counseling of nursing personnel as appropriate and follow up with accurate reports to the Unit Manager and Assistant Manager, Care Coordination. Promote and enthusiastically support professional growth of staff by providing equal opportunities for participation in unit‑based activities, patient care/unit decisions, hospital committees, and/or continuing education. Responsible for maintaining/improving/implementing plans for employee engagement scores.
  • Ensure first‑person reporting of events through RL Solutions and ensure all staff are competent in entering event reports. Serve as a resource when necessary, investigate facts of event reports, and facilitate timely receipt of these reports for follow‑up by the Unit Manager. Notify Nurse Manager/Risk Manager immediately of high‑risk situations.
  • Actively participate in routine and special patient care conferences. Responsible for maintaining/improving/implementing plans for patient satisfaction scores. Work with the Unit Manager, Assistant Manager Care Coordination, Transition Coordinator and other disciplines to streamline discharge of patients and meet goals for time to discharge from orders written.
  • Collect information and maintain records regarding performance and contributions on an ongoing basis throughout the fiscal year. Provide input and/or conduct annual performance reviews and orientation evaluation of personnel assigned to the unit.
  • Coordinate self‑scheduling to maintain appropriate coverage for unit needs. Maintain Kronos records daily, monitoring for trends that require intervention (e.g., late clock‑ins, incremental overtime, missed punches).
  • Assume delegated responsibility for inventory control of equipment and supplies to ensure safe and effective patient care. Facilitate timely return of rented or borrowed specialty equipment and solicit staff input regarding equipment and supply needs for the unit.
  • Assist with staff meetings, special projects, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement activities. Communicate data and solicit input from staff regarding performance and quality improvement (e.g., patient safety, infection control). Actively participate on hospital work groups.
