Job summary

The Town of West Hartford invites applications for an Assistant Corporation Counsel position. This unclassified, non-union role provides professional legal support to the Town Council, Town Manager, and municipal departments, with extensive responsibilities in municipal and real estate matters.

Under direction, you will prepare opinions, draft contracts, and advise on public meetings, zoning, labor, and compliance issues.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an ABA accredited law school and admitted to practice in CT.
  • 5+ years experience as an attorney, preferably municipal law.
  • Equivalent training/experience acceptable per Corporation Counsel.

Responsibilities

  • Advise Town Manager and departments on legal matters across municipal, real estate, land use, labor, health, and building code areas.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, ordinances, deeds, and other legal documents.
  • Represent municipality in litigation, administrative proceedings, and settlement negotiations.
  • Perform complex legal research and provide opinions to boards, commissions, and the Town Council.
  • Assist outside counsel with court documents and proceedings as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with public meetings, FOI, and statutory requirements.
