The Assistant Manager oversees the safe and efficient execution of railcar switching, loading, and terminal operations. This role coordinates daily logistics activities, manages railcar movements and inventory, supports plant production needs, and provides frontline leadership while maintaining a strong safety culture and operational efficiency.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily railcar washing, switching, and loading activities.
  • Conduct detailed railcar inspections prior to loading to ensure equipment is in proper condition.
  • Oversee safe railcar switching and positioning operations within loading structures.
  • Ensure accurate product loading in accordance with customer documentation and operational requirements.
  • Perform and verify product sampling procedures associated with railcar loading.
  • Maintain accurate reconciliation, tracking, and reporting of operational activities.
  • Utilize loading management software to accurately document railcar movements, loading, and departures.
  • Coordinate and oversee safe rail operations and switch lists based on operational priorities.
  • Identify and proactively resolve logistics challenges to support uninterrupted operations.
  • Communicate regularly with plant personnel to align loading activities with production schedules.
  • Monitor product quality control and operational consistency between customers’ stakeholders.
  • Manage railcar inventory requirements, including car type, ownership, and volume needs to support production demands.
  • Conduct routine frontline inspections and Tier 1 maintenance checks of work areas and loading infrastructure.
  • Provide timely operational reporting and updates to management.
  • Ensure clear and professional shift handovers between operating teams.
  • Lead and support Operation Clean Sweep and 5S initiatives within the facility.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of rail operations, switching requirements, and railcar reliability.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety leadership in industrial environments involving heavy equipment and active rail movements.
  • Ability to supervise multiple team members performing simultaneous operational tasks.
  • Strong verbal communication and leadership skills with the ability to provide clear operational direction.
  • Capable of working independently while maintaining efficient operational flow.
  • Demonstrates accountability, initiative, and a strong sense of ownership.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify operational issues and support effective resolutions.

Education & Experience

  • Experience in rail operations, transloading, or bulk material handling environments preferred.
  • Managerial experience is a MUST!
  • Experience assuming progressive responsibilities in industrial or logistics operations.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to workplace safety procedures and practices

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily outdoor work in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to walk and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for extended periods.
  • Work environment includes both office and industrial plant settings.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods when required.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training or operational support opportunities.
