Sylvania is seeking an Assistant Lead Custodian - Licensed Boiler Engineer to oversee night custodial staff and basic building operations in a school setting.

The role requires a 2nd Class Boiler Engineer’s License or eligibility, strong knowledge of building systems, and the ability to perform basic repairs. You will ensure safety, cleanliness, and readiness for daily activities and emergencies.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Direct night custodial staff to ensure work meets district standards.
• Lead and assist staff with daily cleaning and building maintenance tasks.
• Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, and common areas.
• Manage waste disposal and hazardous materials per procedures.
• Perform snow and ice removal and basic outdoor maintenance.
• Set up equipment for classes, events, and activities with building staff.
• Receive, store, and distribute custodial supplies and maintain inventories.
• Inspect furniture and equipment; report safety concerns and needed repairs.
• Keep custodial and maintenance equipment in good condition; replenish supplies.
• Secure the building at shift end and verify doors and gates.
• Assist with emergency procedures (fire, storms, lockdown, evacuations).

Job description

Position Title: Assistant Lead Custodian - Licensed Boiler Engineer

Reports To: Building Lead Supervisor and/or Building and Grounds Supervisor

Classification: Support Staff

Job Objective

Supports the safe, efficient operation, maintenance, and cleanliness of the school building and grounds. During the night shift, this position provides on-site direction to custodial staff and, in the absence of the Building Lead, assumes responsibility for routine building operations, including basic mechanical systems, minor repairs, supplies, and custodial needs. Maintains regular communication with the Building Lead regarding building operations, concerns, and needed repairs.

Minimum Qualifications

• Possess or be eligible for a 2nd Class Boiler Engineer’s License.
• Knowledge of building systems and mechanical equipment.
• Mechanical aptitude to perform basic repairs and maintenance involving plumbing, heating, ventilation, and electrical equipment and identify when additional service is required.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to pass required background checks and medical or fit testing associated with required personal protective equipment.

Physical Demands

The position requires the physical ability to safely perform custodial and building maintenance duties, including:

• Lift up to 60 pounds unassisted and up to 120 pounds with assistance or appropriate equipment.
• Stand, walk, bend, reach, kneel, stoop, push, pull, and perform repetitive movements for extended periods.
• Climb and work from ladders and elevated areas.
• Work on a variety of surfaces and in confined spaces, including tunnels and boiler rooms.
• Operate custodial, maintenance, snow removal, and other equipment requiring gross and fine motor skills.
• Communicate effectively by telephone and two‑way radio.
• Respond promptly to emergency situations throughout the building and take appropriate action.

Performance Responsibilities

• Provides direction and assistance to night custodial staff to help ensure assigned work is completed efficiently and according to district standards.
• Lead and assist assigned custodial staff in completing daily cleaning and building-maintenance responsibilities and provide training as needed.
• Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, hallways, stairs, restrooms, locker rooms, drinking fountains, and other assigned areas, including floors, walls, windows, fixtures, furniture, and surfaces.
• Empty trash and dispose of waste according to district procedures; maintain proficiency in hazardous waste management, universal precautions, and bio-spill procedures.
• Perform snow and ice removal, including shoveling, blowing, sweeping, and salting.
• Set up and take down chairs, bleachers, risers, and other equipment for classes, athletic events, concerts, meetings, and special events in coordination with building staff.
• Receive, unload, store, and distribute equipment and supplies and maintain appropriate inventories of custodial supplies.
• Inspect furniture, equipment, and building conditions; perform minor repairs and promptly report safety concerns, damage, needed repairs, or unusual conditions.
• Maintain custodial and maintenance equipment in proper working condition and replenish cleaning supplies as needed.
• Secure the building at the end of assigned shifts, including checking doors, windows, lights, and hall gates.
• Assist with emergency procedures, including fire, severe weather, lockdown, evacuation, and other building emergencies as directed.
• Follow all district policies, procedures, safety requirements, and supervisor directives.
