Job summary

The City of Defiance is seeking a qualified attorney to join its legal team. You will provide vital legal counsel to city officials, prosecute traffic offenses and misdemeanors, and support civil litigation and labor matters for the City.

Applicants must hold a law degree, active Ohio license, and strong research, writing, and communication skills; municipal law or civil litigation experience is preferred. This on-site role offers comprehensive benefits and OPERS retirement.

Qualifications

• An active license to practice law in Ohio and good standing with the Supreme Court of Ohio.
• Strong legal research, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Municipal law, prosecution, or civil litigation experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prosecute traffic offenses and criminal misdemeanor cases in Municipal Court.
• Represent the State of Ohio during applicable stages of felony cases before the Municipal Court.
• Assist in representing the City in civil litigation, labor and employment matters, and other legal matters assigned by the City Law Director.
• Research legal issues and prepare briefs, memoranda, pleadings, motions, and other legal documents.
• Communicate professionally and build effective working relationships with colleagues, opposing counsel, crime victims, and the public.

Compensation and benefits

The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $88,000, based on qualifications and experience. The City offers health, dental, and vision insurance; paid vacation; accrued sick leave; paid City holidays; and participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS).
