GENERAL PURPOSE:

The assistant instructor for the SPaRA Summer Calculus Boot Camp, based at California State University, Chico, will assist the lead instructors in providing high-quality instruction and academic support to students participating in the STEM Pathways and Research Alliance (SPaRA) program. The primary purpose of this role is to assist in facilitating students' successful transition to college-level mathematics by teaching foundational concepts, enhancing problem‑solving skills, and fostering academic confidence. The assistant instructor will help create an inclusive and engaging learning environment, offering personalized support to help students overcome challenges and prepare for future STEM courses.

Instruction and Curriculum Delivery

• Assist the lead instructor in teaching college-level mathematics concepts in alignment with the SPaRA Summer Calculus Boot Camp curriculum.
• Assist in delivering engaging lesson plans that accommodate diverse learning styles and academic backgrounds.
• Explain mathematical concepts clearly, providing examples and real-world applications to enhance understanding.
• Support the lead instructor in facilitating a capstone project that fosters critical thinking, collaboration and mathematical skills.

Facilitate ALEKS PPL and Math Placement

• Provide personalized support to help students improve mathematical skills and prepare for retesting in the ALEKS PPL (Placement, Preparation, and Learning) system to achieve placement in the most appropriate, highest-level GE math course for the upcoming fall semester.

Student Support and Engagement

• Foster an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that encourages student participation and engagement.
• Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to help clarify challenging concepts.

Building Academic Community

• Facilitate activities that promote a strong academic community where students support one another in learning and growth.
• Encourage peer collaboration and sharing of ideas and resources within the classroom.
• Create opportunities for group study sessions and collaborative learning experiences.

Supporting Study Habits and Time Management

• Guide students in developing effective study habits and time management strategies to improve academic performance.
• Advise students on exam preparation, coursework management, and organizational skills.
• Provide resources on academic success strategies and connect students to university support services as needed.

Collaboration and Teamwork

• Collaborate with program coordinators, other instructors, and academic advisors to ensure alignment of course objectives and student success.
• Participate in regular team meetings to discuss student progress, share best practices, and identify areas for improvement.

Assessment and Evaluation

• Track and document student progress, providing feedback to students and program leadership.
• Identify students who may need additional support and refer them to appropriate resources.

Student Mentorship and Motivation

• Serve as a mentor and role model, encouraging students to set academic goals and providing guidance to achieve them.
• Promote a growth mindset, helping students develop resilience and persistence in the face of academic challenges.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Mathematics.
• Able to work up to 140 hours, including required pre-camp training and full three-week summer program schedule (Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m.).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bilingual candidates.
• Alumni of the program.
• Prior teaching experience in the LSAMP Summer Calculus Boot Camp or similar mathematics programs.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while teaching or facilitating activities.
• Ability to use computers and instructional technology for lesson preparation, communication, and grading.
• Ability to lift and carry instructional materials (10-15 lbs.).
• Ability to move between classrooms or campus locations as needed.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.

COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Chico State Enterprises will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current Chico State Enterprises employee who was conditionally offered the position.
