Job summary

The Office of Inspector General is the independent oversight body for Chicago’s approximately 500 public, contract, and charter schools. The Office of Inspector General is charged with the responsibility of investigating allegations of waste, fraud, and financial mismanagement in public education within the jurisdiction of the Chicago Board of Education. The Office’s Sexual Allegations Unit (SAU) investigates allegations of sexual misconduct by a CPS-affiliated adult, including employees, contractors, vendors, and charter schools, where the victim is a CPS student and/or a minor.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Inspector General, the Assistant Inspector General, Sexual Allegations Unit will provide legal counsel and support to the OIG’s Sexual Allegations Unit, which investigates cases involving sexual abuse or sexual harassment of CPS students. This is a full-time exempt position that will be paid for time worked based on a salary basis.

The Assistant Inspector General will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

• Write and edit investigative summary reports, which are sent to the Chicago Board of Education
• Supervise, develop, and manage the performance of staff attorneys
• Work with and coordinate with outside law enforcement entities, CPS’s Law, Safety and Security and Student Protections/Title IX Offices, other departments, and external agencies as appropriate
• Provide legal counsel, support, and guidance on topics pertaining to investigations in the OIG’s Sexual Allegations Unit including, but not limited to, the OIG’s jurisdiction, Title IX and other statutes pertaining to sexual misconduct, search and seizure, other constitutional issues, and other labor and employment issues

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Assistant Inspector General must possess the following qualifications:

Education Required:

• Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school, required
• Admission to the Bar required
• Illinois Bar Admission, preferred

Experience Required:

• Minimum of five (5) years of directly related work experience (e.g., investigations, legal practice, clerkships, etc.), including a minimum of three (3) of related post-bar experience
• Professional writing experience such as serving as a judicial law clerk or experience with other demanding legal writing or other rigorous writing with an emphasis on clarity and polish, highly preferred
• Experience closely editing the written work of others, preferred
• Experience in the areas of government oversight, criminal/administrative prosecutions, ethics or labor/employment law, preferred
• Experience in the areas of sexual misconduct, particularly child sexual abuse or sexual harassment preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to write and edit accurate, concise, logical, and analytical reports to convey complex issues, free from spelling and grammatical errors
• Refined judgment with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information
• Analytical and critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information and facilitate the resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle issues of complex and extreme sensitivity
• Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines, and work independently while maintaining high levels of organization
• Interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse constituents

Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

• Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency – Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency
