Job summary

City of East Point is seeking a Fire Inspector/Code Enforcer to oversee and coordinate fire code enforcement activities. The role involves inspecting buildings, reviewing plans for compliance, and coordinating with architects, engineers, and various professionals to ensure safety standards are met.

Ideal candidates will have GA firefighter experience, an EMT-Advanced certification, and a Georgia driver’s license, plus an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science or related field.

Qualifications

  • Five years of experience as a State of Georgia firefighter, with at least 3 years with East Point Fire Department.
  • Must be EMT Advanced or higher.
  • Valid State of Georgia Class E Driver’s License.
  • Must obtain an Associate's Degree in Fire Science or a related field.
  • Fire Inspector I, II, Fire Investigator I, II, Fire and Life Safety Educator, Plan Reviewer certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect new and existing buildings for code compliance; issue citations as required.
  • Install fire protection devices that detect and control fire in early stages.
  • Review building plans for adherence to fire safety codes.
  • Coordinate with buildings, architects, engineers and other professionals.
  • Approve or disapprove plans; maintain records and reports.
  • Review plats and development plans for adherence to fire safety codes.
  • Assist the fire safety educator; make presentations to civic and community groups.
  • Perform fire cause investigations.
  • Develop the code enforcement process to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.
  • Train new fire inspectors on inspection and code enforcement processes.
  • Perform hazardous materials inspections as necessary; prepare and review inspection reports.
  • Prepare draft fire safety ordinance and coordinate adoption with entities.
  • Plan and implement community fire education programs.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of fire safety training and education programs.
  • Enforce all city fire codes and ordinances; regulations.
  • Assist with major fires and investigations; photograph evidence and store it per policy.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions; coordinate HR within the department.

Job description

This position is responsible for oversight and coordination of fire code enforcement activities. This person in this position performs fire and emergency medical activities as required.

Major Duties
  • Inspects new and existing buildings and developments for code compliance; issues citations as required;
  • Installs fire protection devices that detect and control fire in the early stages;
  • Participates in the development of the plan review process; reviews building plans for adherence to fire safety codes;
  • Coordinates and communicates with buildings, architects, engineers and other industry professionals;
  • Approves or disapproves plans; maintains records and reports;
  • Reviews plats and development plans for adherence to fire safety codes;
  • Assists the fire safety educator as necessary; make presentations to civic and community groups
  • Performs fire cause investigations;
  • Participates in development of the code enforcement process that ensures compliance with fire safety regulations;
  • Trains new fire inspectors about the various inspection and code enforcement processes;
  • Performs hazardous materials inspections as necessary;Prepares and review inspection reports;
  • Prepares draft fire safety ordinance and submit to chief for review; coordinates adoption of ordinance with appropriate local and state entities;
  • Plans, organizes and implements community fire education program utilizing fire investigation data and statistics as a curriculum and program reference;
  • Evaluates effectiveness of all fire safety training and education programs;
  • Enforces all city fire codes and ordinances and regulations;
  • Assists with major fires and all fire related deaths; conducts investigations of suspicious fires;
  • Photographs fire damage and evidence of fire causes; processes and stores evidence in compliance with departmental policies and procedures;
  • Attends meetings, seminars and training sessions as required;
  • Coordinates various fire department human resources and internal affairs;
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Five (5) years of experience as a State of Georgia firefighter with a minimum of 3 years with East Point Fire Department.
  • Must be an EMT Advanced or higher.
  • Valid State of Georgia Class E Driver’s License
  • Must obtain an Associate's Degree in Fire Science or a related field.

Knowledge Required by the Position
  • Knowledge of City of East Point Fire Codes and related ordinances;
  • Knowledge of modern fire inspection principals, practices and methods;
  • Knowledge of fire investigation practices;
  • Knowledge of fire protection systems;
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials, water supply systems, fire loads, fire cause determination and fire safety education;
  • Knowledge of building construction;
  • Knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the city;
  • Knowledge of emergency care methods, techniques and equipment;
  • Knowledge of management and supervisory practices and procedures;
  • Skill in reading building plans and specifications;
  • Ability to read blueprints and plats;
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees, architects, construction workers, builders and the public;
  • Ability to apply judgment in making decisions on code compliance;
  • Ability to express ideas clearly orally and in writing;
  • Ability to apply and enforce codes and ordinances;
  • Ability to perform prolonged work under adverse conditions.
