Job summary

Teichert, Inc. is seeking an experienced estimator in San Diego to contribute to project profitability by delivering accurate and timely estimates through review of specs, drawings, and historical data.

You will coordinate with field teams, prepare change orders, and help drive cost-effective solutions. The role requires five years in heavy civil estimating, with preference for solar project experience, and a strong command of estimating software such as HCSS, AutoCAD, and Vista.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
  • Minimum of five years of estimating experience in heavy civil, or an equivalent combination of technical training and related experience.
  • Preferably two or more years of estimating or project management experience in the solar construction industry.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately prepares estimates by reviewing proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope.
  • Calculates takeoffs for scope of work using computer aided systems and estimates manpower, equipment, and material needs.
  • Coordinates job setup including breakdowns, subcontracts, and purchase orders; reviews plans and field changes; prepares change orders.
  • Partners with Project Managers and Superintendents on problem resolution and improving efficiency in achieving project goals.
  • Builds and maintains positive client relationships; negotiates bids or scope of work and communicates policies and standards.
  • Supports safety programs to maintain a safe, healthy work environment; participates in safety meetings and training.
  • Completes internal administrative tasks such as project logs, files, and reports; contributes to estimating guidelines and policies.

Job description

Purpose

The purpose of this role is to contribute to the success and profitability of projects by providing accurate, timely, and complete estimates. This role provides ongoing assistance during the building phase of projects that may include: estimate interpretation, problem resolution, and successful processing of change orders.



Focus & Scope

Essential duties and responsibilities, i.e. those which are basic, necessary, and an integral part of the job, are indicated below:




  1. Actively supports the achievement of Estimating function's goals and objectives. Shares knowledge and stays abreast of evolving industry trends and best practices, including new techniques and equipment used in industry. Ensures a focus on long range priorities, customer feedback, and continuously strives to make improvements to day-to-day processes and procedures.

  2. Collaborates across area offices and supports consistent estimating practices and administrative procedures. Ensures policies, procedures, and standards are adhered to as well as protect the company's interests.

  3. Establishes, promotes, and protects Teichert's values including diversity, teamwork, fair work environment, and respect of others. Maintains a \"team\" spirit within the business unit. Works and cooperates with other disciplines (across company lines). Uses resources effectively and efficiently.

  4. Promotes and protects the community perception of Teichert.



Technical / Specialty Area


  1. Accurately prepares estimates. Reviews proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope. Determines required contents of estimates and evaluates historical data in order to project unit and man hour figures. Completes projects on time, in accordance to business and company standards, policies, and procedures.

  2. Establishes and coordinates completion dates and technical specifications in estimates for project teams. Specifically: calculates complete takeoff for scope of work using computer aided system; estimates manpower, equipment, and material needs; coordinates with field personnel to schedule work; and continually evaluates progress and results.

  3. Coordinates job set up by preparing breakdowns, subcontracts, purchase orders, and other required documents on procured projects. Reviews plans and field changes. Prepares change orders, as required.

  4. Partners with Project Managers and Superintendents on problem resolution, implementing ongoing efficiencies, and improving ways of accomplishing project goals. Recommends and incorporates changes in procedures, objectives, or best solutions based on cost, engineering quality, and availability of materials.

  5. Identifies, and acts upon, potential lines of business and new client prospects to assist with creating new business opportunities.

  6. Builds and maintains positive client relationships resulting in increased business, repeat customers, and industry referrals. Ability to maintain client relationships while negotiating bids or scope of work. Communicates company and project policies, procedures, and standards. Gathers feedback and continuously makes improvements to work processes, practices, and equipment.

  7. Assists in achieving a zero injury culture through the support of Teichert's Injury Prevention and Safety program and active participation in appropriate safety meetings and training sessions to maintain a safe, healthy work environment and meet corporate safety standards.

  8. Completes internal administrative organization and documentation, including project logs, files, records and reports pertaining to Estimating function. May include bids, cost estimates, state and federal regulations and codes. Contributes to written and up-to-date estimating guidelines, manuals, and policies and procedures.

Role Qualifications & Requirements


Education:



  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, (or related field) or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience



Experience & Industry Expertise:



  • Minimum of five years of estimating experience in heavy civil, or equivalent combination of technical training and related experience

  • Preferably two or more years of experience estimating or managing projects in the solar construction industry



Specific Job Requirements:



  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug, alcohol, and background investigation

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Current on all company required safety training

  • Strong knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)

  • Ability to preserve confidential and proprietary information and successfully avoid conflicts-of-interest

  • Strong working knowledge of computers and peripheral material including software and equipment for estimating and project management

  • Good working knowledge of collective bargaining agreements, personnel issues and EEO

  • Thorough knowledge of construction contracts/ law

  • Strong understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards, technology, equipment methods, cost control, schedules, etc. and their impact on project activities

  • Occasional travel required

  • Strong working knowledge of company's Standard Operating Policies and Procedures

  • A successful candidate will have specific experience in these Solar and Civil Estimating skills:


    • Experienced with estimating software programs (HCSS preferred), AutoCAD and Vista a plus.

    • Understanding of energy storage systems, a plus

    • Ability to take off both civil and solar bidding tasks

    • Understanding and ability to bid ground mount and canopy systems, a plus.

Physical Demands & Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Physical: Sitting for long periods of time working at the computer or driving to job sites. Job site visits require walking on uneven ground, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling in confined or enclosed spaces. Some lifting of materials and equipment up to 50 lbs. Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. May work long hours during peak seasons.

  • Work Environment: Typical office environment with adequate temperatures and lighting, low levels of noise. Demands of meeting tight deadlines. Exposed to the conditions of job sites which can include loud noise, dust, fumes, and extreme weather conditions prevalent at the time. May work various shifts or hours, including early mornings, dusk or evenings.



BASE SALARY RANGE:

$103,600.00 - $145,040.00


The range displayed reflects the range the company reasonable expects to pay for the position. The actual base salary is subject to variation due to the role, level, geographic location, relevant education, training, or experience, among other factors.
