Qualifications

• Proof of passing the FE exam and a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher.
• One year of full-time qualifying engineering experience in sanitary, public health or environmental engineering.
• Current NYS employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a Grade 18+ position or higher and eligible for transfer.

Responsibilities

• Assist in designing water/wastewater treatment and related systems.
• Assist in preparing reports relating to water/wastewater and other environmental systems.
• Prepare drawings, specifications, estimates and studies under licensed staff.
• Coordinate design drawings and construction cost estimates with other disciplines.
• Assist with scheduling projects according to workload and design schedules.
• Review reports, drawings, specs, and cost estimates prepared by design consultants.
• Supervise consultant design work where applicable.
• Develop and maintain project documentation including meetings and correspondence.
• Collaborate with senior designers and project managers to meet goals.
• Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and support construction administration.

Duties include but may not be limited to:

• Assist in performing environmental engineering duties including designing water/wastewater treatment systems, distribution systems, onsite disposal systems, etc.
• Assist in preparing reports relating to water/wastewater and other environmental engineering systems, including recommendations for changes in design, construction or operational procedures and practices.
• Prepare environmental drawings and details, specifications, estimates, and/or studies for design projects under the direction of licensed staff.
• Coordinate design drawings and related specifications, construction costs estimates, etc., with the other disciplines.
• Assist in scheduling assigned projects according to workload, priorities, and design schedules.
• Assist in the review of reports, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates prepared by design consultants.
• Assist with the supervision of consultant design work.
• Develop and maintain project documentation, including records of meetings, correspondence, and progress
• Collaborate with senior designers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure project goals are met.
• Review shop drawings, respond to contractor Requests for Information, create and/or review Information Bulletins, and provide similar construction administration and observation during the project’s construction.
• May supervise consultant work.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Operational Needs

• Travel may be required (approximately 20%).
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver's License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.

Minimum Qualifications

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:

Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below; OR proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.

Qualifying degrees: Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Design Engineering, Environmental Resources Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering, Forest Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Paper Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Soil and Water Resources Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.

Qualifying experience: One year of full-time experience in sanitary, public health or environmental engineering

OR

Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to a Grade 18 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law

NOTE: IN ORDER TO AWARD THE PROPER CREDIT FOR WORK EXPERIENCE, RESUMES MUST INCLUDE MONTH AND YEAR FOR START AND END DATES. IF ANY OF THIS EXPERIENCE IS LESS THAN FULL TIME, YOU MUST INDICATE THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF HOURS WORKED PER WEEK.

Notes:

• There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Salary Adjustments for Positions at the Assistant level in Buffalo

Geographic pay differential added to hiring salary $7,000.
