Job description

Golden Alaska Seafoods operates the MV Golden Alaska, a 305’ mothership seafood processor that operates in the Bering Sea pollock fishery and Pacific Whiting fishery off the US West Coast.

For most people, living and working aboard a processing ship is very different from any other situation you will likely encounter and brings challenges on a daily basis. At the height of A Season and B Season it takes the full efforts and resources of over 130 people to keep up with the steady supply of incoming fish and to maintain 24-hour production.

This means demanding, long hours for everyone, constant noise, cramped quarters with little or no privacy, fatigue, physical discomfort and boredom. Don’t come aboard the vessel with adventurous notions of life at sea. In reality, life at sea is often dull and uncomfortable. It certainly is not an experience for everyone.

Golden Alaska Seafoods, LLC. is seeking a 1st Assistant Engineer for our at-sea mothership sector fishing operations for Alaska Pollock and associated shipyard maintenance and repair.

  • Pollock B season starts mid-June and goes until October (~14 trips).
  • Pollock A Season starts in early January and goes until early April (~10 trips).
  • You can expect to complete 10-15 trips per year through a rotation method, plus shipyard rotation responsibilities.
Duties
  • Engages in monitoring and management of preventive maintenance programs on all onboard engineering systems, pumps, motors, steam boiler, refrigeration, and fishmeal plant.
  • Effectively coordinates with all vessel department heads to ensure safe, efficient operation of vessel.
  • Fishmeal and Factory Mechanics work mostly self-sufficiently, but are supported by the Engine Room.
  • Provides required information for the cost analysis on proposed system modifications, upgrades or replacements.
  • Maintains ship fuel and discharge logs.
  • Assists Port Engineer with shipyard projects as needed.
  • Participates in drills, required safety training, and any other company required courses.
  • Maintain complete records of engineering department activities, including machine operations.

The Engineering department, under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of all vessel engineering systems and processes, diesel propulsion and electric generating systems, deck hydraulic and pneumatic systems, Refrigeration systems, and fuel and lubrication systems. In addition, the Engineering department works closely with all other departments, especially the Factory, in that Fishmeal plant maintenance, when needed, is assisted by the Engine Room Department.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of at-sea engine room experience
