This position plays a vital role in supporting the success and well-being of Augustana's international student community by providing comprehensive advising, ensuring compliance with federal immigration regulations, and creating meaningful opportunities for students to engage academically, socially, and culturally. The Assistant Director also contributes to the university's broader internationalization efforts through exchange programs, custom international initiatives, and grant development.

The Assistant Director serves as a Designated School Official (DSO), advising F-1 international and exchange students on immigration, cultural adjustment, and personal success while maintaining SEVIS compliance. This position develops and coordinates orientation programs, workshops, cultural programming, and student engagement initiatives, collaborates with campus partners to foster a welcoming environment for international students, and supports custom programs and international partnerships that strengthen the university's global presence.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and maintain compliance with federal immigration regulations through accurate SEVIS record management.
  • Advise international and exchange students regarding immigration requirements, academic success, cultural adjustment, employment regulations, and personal concerns.
  • Coordinate international student orientation, workshops, cultural programming, field trips, and engagement activities throughout the academic year.
  • Serve as the primary advisor for exchange student programs, including IREX and UGRAD participants.
  • Teach or co-teach the required first-year international student success course.
  • Coordinate and oversee custom international programs, including planning, implementation, fiscal stewardship, and assessment.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to enhance international student support and advance the university's global engagement initiatives.
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities that support international education and institutional internationalization efforts.
  • Assist with communication initiatives, including student updates and regulatory information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A successful candidate will possess:

  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status as required by federal regulations governing Designated School Officials.
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience advising F-1 international students, preferably within higher education.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and intercultural communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management abilities with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while working independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and student information or immigration management systems.
  • Valid driver's license and passport.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Three to five years of experience advising F-1 international students.
  • Experience with SEVIS administration and immigration compliance software.
  • Experience developing custom international programs or recruiting international students.
  • Grant writing experience.
  • Foreign language proficiency and/or experience working with multilingual populations.
  • Experience teaching, program development, or event planning within higher education.
