POSITION OVERVIEW
JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director, Multimedia Production builds and runs the creative production system through which WUWF makes multimedia work, develops student producers and carries out university and community partnerships. This is a producer's job, a coach's job and a partner-facing job rather than a desk-management role: the incumbent conceives a strong piece, shoots or directs it, edits it, builds the crew around it, and teaches students to do more of that work themselves. The role spans video, audio, live and digital production, with RadioLive and WUWF's live events at its center. It produces the station's recurring spot and promo inventory, builds a recurring student production cohort, and serves as WUWF's principal day-to-day production partner for university units and external clients. The position reports to the Director of Operations & Technology and works closely with Content & Audience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience: or a bachelors degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience. A portfolio demonstrating strong creative judgment and hands-on execution across multiple forms of production. Fluency with professional camera, lighting, audio and non-linear editing workflows, sufficient to produce high-quality work personally and coach others in the craft. Experience leading productions or crews, including responsibility for schedules, assignments, quality control and final delivery. Demonstrated ability to coach, supervise or develop students, interns, early-career creators or less-experienced crew members. Experience working with clients, partners or internal stakeholders and turning feedback into a finished product without losing production discipline. Strong project-management judgment under competing deadlines, including the ability to say what a production requires and when capacity is insufficient. Ability to work regular evening and weekend productions and occasional travel as the assignment requires.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Live audio, podcast, studio or live-music production experience. Live multi-camera production, streaming, control-room or venue production experience. Sports-media, athletics-production or game-presentation experience. Motion-graphics, visual-design or advanced post-production capability. Experience building repeatable student, intern or freelance production crews rather than relying solely on individual craft. Experience in higher education, or in a professional environment that regularly integrates students into real production work. Experience producing social and short-form digital content as part of a broader multiplatform strategy. Graduate degree or active graduate study in communication, media, journalism, production or a related field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:
  • 40% - Production: RadioLive, live events and multimedia. Produce and direct WUWF's live and event productions, with RadioLive as the flagship, to a broadcast-ready standard, with clear run-of-show, crew assignments, communications plans and contingencies. Produce, direct, shoot and edit high-value multimedia work across video, audio, live, studio and digital formats, remaining a hands-on practitioner rather than only assigning work to others. Provide video production for WUWF podcasts, series and other original content. Editorial priorities and approval sit with Content & Audience; production planning, crews, craft and delivery sit here. Translate editorial and audience goals into creative concepts, treatments and production plans, and lead pre-production and post-production on complex projects, including crew assignments, schedules, locations, releases, technical requirements, edit review and final delivery. Set and model professional standards for visual storytelling, sound, pacing, graphics, framing, lighting and production value, matching effort to the importance and lifespan of the work, and develop recurring formats that staff and students can produce efficiently. Produce recorded spots and promos for the station's recurring inventory, including underwriting and day-sponsor credits, membership and pledge spots, promotional announcements, learning-minute segments and event spots. Revenue & Development leads this work and brings in on-air talent to voice; this role provides recording, editing, mixing and delivery. Plan for the realities of live work (evenings, weekends, travel, rapid turnaround and equipment failure) without compromising safety or core station obligations. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Student production and applied learning. Build and supervise a recurring student production cohort that can return and deepen across semesters rather than starting from zero with each internship cycle. Recruit students across Communication Arts and other academic programs, and design onboarding that makes expectations, professional standards, crew roles and pathways to advancement explicit. Coach students from novice through advanced work in camera, audio, lighting, editing, live production, digital storytelling, set etiquette and production problem-solving, giving specific feedback and ensuring every supervised placement produces genuine learning, meaningful responsibility and portfolio-quality artifacts. Create a competency ladder that moves reliable students from shadowing to discrete assignments, including supervised partner projects, to crew leadership and increasingly independent production responsibility. Develop student crews capable of performing defined live-production roles consistently under deadline and public-facing conditions. Maintain the faculty relationships that allow practica, course partnerships and internships to recur; support or teach a production practicum if an academic appointment is established. Track student participation, skills, assignments and portfolio work so WUWF can demonstrate the university value the program creates. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Partnerships and client production. Serve as WUWF's principal day-to-day production partner for Athletics, Marketing & Communications, other university units and external clients, converting partner needs into executable production plans. Produce or direct partner work, including sports and university events, coordinating with Athletics Communications and other partners on game-day and event needs while keeping brand authority with the partner and production execution with the WUWF-led team. Scope projects within approved priorities, budgets and capacity: define audience, purpose, deliverables, deadlines, approvals, production load, student-learning value and the responsibilities of each partner. Estimate staffing, equipment, travel and other resource requirements, and elevate significant new commitments and capacity conflicts early to leadership. Build repeatable production relationships with clear calendars, intake processes, handoffs and expectations, so partner projects are well planned and reliably delivered. Help develop and apply WUWF's framework for university production partnerships, including scope, capacity and cost recovery, and agreements with large recurring partners. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Department management and production systems. Supervise assigned staff, including the Station Technology & Digital Support position (109790), and student, OPS and freelance production personnel: set expectations, assign work, evaluate performance and support development. Manage assigned production budgets, student and OPS hours, freelance support and project resources with clear documentation and cost discipline. Maintain production workflows that are understandable and repeatable across staff and student crews: project intake, file naming, media management, review, delivery and archive. Keep production equipment organized, deployable and documented in coordination with the Director of Operations & Technology, and recommend equipment, software, platform and technical-standard needs through that director. Evaluate new production tools, including AI-assisted tools, where they can improve speed or quality without undermining rights, accuracy, transparency or professional judgment. Represent WUWF in production-related university and community relationships, surface opportunities that advance both public service and student learning, and contribute production, partnership and student-engagement results to station planning and leadership reporting, including what should be scaled, changed or stopped. - (Essential)
