Job summary

Cleveland Metropolitan School District is seeking a Facilities staff member to support the care and operation of public schools at the East Professional Center. Under supervision of a custodian, you will perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks to maintain buildings and grounds and assist with preventive maintenance.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, and while a High-Pressure Boiler Operators License (Ohio) is preferred, a successful Civil Service Examination and a good attendance

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Ohio High-Pressure Boiler Operators License preferred.
  • Experience in school building maintenance preferred.
  • Successful completion of Civil Service Examination.
  • Good attendance and punctuality record.

Responsibilities

  • Keep buildings and grounds neat and clean at all times.
  • Monitor HVAC systems to maintain temperatures and efficient utility use.
  • Operate boilers, pumps, and related equipment under supervision.
  • Shovel, plow, and salt walks and areas as required.
  • Perform yard maintenance and grounds upkeep.
  • Make building repairs as capable.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance per manual and log.
  • Perform other duties while observing established procedures.

Under the immediate supervision of a custodian, the employee performs miscellaneous unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks in the care and operation of public schools; performs related work as required.

Responsibilities
  • Keep buildings and grounds—including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas—neat and clean at all times.
  • Monitor heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning systems to maintain appropriate temperatures and ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Operate boilers, pumps, and related equipment under the supervision of the custodian.
  • Shovel, plow, and salt walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps when required.
  • Perform yard‑keeping chores such as grass cutting, tree and shrub trimming, and other maintenance necessary to keep school grounds safe and attractive.
  • Make building repairs as capable.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance in accordance with the Preventive Maintenance Manual and Log.
  • Perform other related duties as required while observing strict compliance with established procedures.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Valid High‑Pressure Boiler Operators License issued by the State of Ohio (preferred).
  • Experience in school building maintenance (preferred).
  • Successful completion of Civil Service Examination.
  • Good work record including performance, attendance, and punctuality.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Ability to hear, speak, read, and write; sit and/or stand for extended periods; use hands to operate equipment.
  • Ability to kneel, bend at the waist, reach overhead and horizontally, and lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 80 pounds.
  • Work on ladders, lifts, scaffolding, and other equipment at required heights.
  • Exposure to moderate hazards such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.
  • Specific vision abilities: close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
