Job summary

Office of the New York State Comptroller seeks a highly experienced attorney to support investment portfolio management. The role involves negotiating and drafting substantive documents and addressing complex legal matters across diverse asset classes in public equities, fixed income, real estate, and private investments.

The successful candidate will advise investment staff, supervise outside counsel, and ensure compliance with corporate and securities laws, ERISA, and related frameworks.

Qualifications

  • Must have admitted to the New York State Bar and two years of practice after admission.
  • Preferred: meaningful investment management law experience, particularly in respect of alternative investments.
  • 5+ years of large corporate law firm or in-house experience in private investment fund formation and/or mergers & acquisitions.
  • Knowledge of fixed income and public equities investments.
  • Knowledge of corporate, partnership and securities law; ERISA generally.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiating skills.
  • Experience working on bespoke investment transactions.
  • Ability to handle several matters concurrently and meet transaction timing needs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with investment staff and provide pragmatic solutions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication with senior staff.
  • Ability to manage outside counsel cost-effectively.
  • Working knowledge of finance and accounting.

Job description

Duties Description

Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidates must have been admitted to the New York State Bar and must have had two years of experience in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar.
Preferred Qualifications/Knowledge, skills, and abilities

Telecommuting

The Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based upon the agency’s mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OSC will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8 calendar week restriction, if an employee’s primary residence location, duties, and work performance are aligned with telecommuting and operational needs they may be allowed to do so. Generally, OSC employees may telecommute up to 5 days per pay period but may be approved to telecommute less.
