LHH in Bergen County, NJ seeks an experienced Assistant Controller to join its finance team on a temporary-to-potential-permanent basis. The role covers general ledger, financial reporting, budgeting, investment accounting, and month-end closes in a banking environment.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years in banking accounting, strong analytical skills, and proficiency with Excel and accounting systems. This onsite position includes a comprehensive benefits package and competitive hourly pay.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent).
• 7+ years of accounting/finance experience within banking.
• Strong knowledge of bank accounting and general ledger processes.
• Experience with financial statement analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
• Familiarity with investment portfolio accounting in banking.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day general ledger and accounting operations to ensure timely, accurate financial data.
• Lead monthly and year-end closes, reconciliations, and reporting activities.
• Manage accounting for investment portfolio activities and related reconciliations.
• Prepare budget-to-actual analyses and provide senior leadership with insights.
• Assist with financial statement preparation, supporting schedules, and footnotes.
• Oversee fixed asset accounting and maintain Bank-wide asset records.
• Produce management and ad hoc reports; partner with leaders to resolve issues.
• Identify process improvements to controls, efficiency, and reporting.

Job description

A well-established financial institution in Bergen County, NJ is seeking an experienced banking accounting professional to join its finance team as an Assistant Controller. This is a temporary-to-potential-permanent opportunity for someone who can step into a hands-on role and make an immediate impact.

This position is fully onsite and is best suited for an accounting professional who understands the unique requirements of accounting in the banking industry and is comfortable working across general ledger, financial reporting, budgeting, investment accounting, and month-end close activities.

What You'll Be Doing:

• Support the day-to-day oversight of the organization's general ledger and accounting operations, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded and financial information is delivered on schedule.
• Play a key role in the monthly and year-end close processes, including account review, reconciliations, analysis, and reporting.
• Oversee accounting activity related to the organization's investment portfolio, including purchases, sales, payments, amortization, income, and related reconciliations.
• Analyze financial statements, operating results, budgets, and expense trends; investigate significant variances and communicate findings to management.
• Prepare and maintain budget-to-actual reporting and provide meaningful analysis to senior leadership.
• Assist with financial statement preparation, supporting schedules, and annual financial statement footnotes.
• Manage and monitor fixed asset accounting and maintain accurate Bank-wide fixed asset records.
• Prepare management reports, financial analyses, and ad hoc reporting in response to business needs.
• Partner with department leaders to address accounting questions, resolve issues, and provide financial guidance.
• Review accounting and financial systems and identify opportunities to improve processes, controls, efficiency, and reporting.
• Help develop and implement accounting procedures and analytical projects as business needs evolve.Serve as a resource to management on general ledger activity, financial results, and accounting-related matters.
• Ensure accounting activities comply with applicable regulations, accounting standards, and internal policies.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• 7+ years of accounting/finance experience within the banking industry is required.
• Strong understanding of bank accounting and general ledger accounting.
• Experience with financial statement analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
• Familiarity with investment portfolio accounting within a banking environment.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial information and translate it into meaningful business insights.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and other financial/accounting systems.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both accounting professionals and business-line management.
