Job summary

J MAR & Associates seeks an hands-on Assistant Controller for a growing midstream energy company. You will oversee outsourced accounting operations and help build the financial infra to support growth, reporting to CFO and positioning for future Controller advancement.

Ideal candidates have progressive midstream accounting experience, especially in natural gas gathering, pipeline, and gas processing. CPA preferred and Excel excellence are highly valued for monthly close and reporting leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; CPA preferred.
• Progressive supervisory or management experience in oil & gas.
• Midstream accounting—gas gathering, pipeline, and gas processing.
• Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables and data analysis.
• Experience leading monthly close and financial reporting.
• Public accounting experience is a plus.
• Able to thrive in a lean, entrepreneurial organization.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; cross-department collaboration.
• Proactive, self-motivated team player with growth potential into Controller.

Responsibilities

• Oversee outsourced accounting operations including accounts payable and treasury.
• Review revenue and invoicing for pipelines and processing facilities.
• Manage monthly accruals and journal entries.
• Lead monthly close and ensure timely financial reporting.
• Coordinate monthly reconciliations and act as liaison with Operations.
• Establish and document internal controls and processes.
• Organize audit schedules and be primary contact for external audit.
• Lead special projects to support growth and execution.

J MAR's client, a growing midstream energy company operating pipeline and natural gas processing infrastructure, is seeking a hands-on Assistant Controller to oversee day-to-day outsourced accounting operations and help build the financial infrastructure needed to support the company's continued growth.

The ideal candidate brings progressive midstream accounting experience with a strong understanding of natural gas gathering, pipeline, and gas processing accounting. Experience performing and/or overseeing gas plant accounting is highly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Oversee outsourced accounting operations, including accounts payable, plant accounting, and treasury.
• Review revenue and invoicing related to pipelines, processing facilities, and disposal systems.
• Manage and review monthly accruals and journal entries.
• Lead monthly close processes and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting.
• Coordinate and review monthly account reconciliations.
• Serve as the key liaison between Accounting and Operations teams.
• Establish and document internal controls and processes.
• Organize audit schedules and supporting documentation while serving as the primary contact for the annual external audit.
• Take ownership of special projects that support company growth and execution.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting. CPA preferred.
• Strong accounting and supervisory or management experience in oil and gas.
• Midstream accounting experience including natural gas gathering, pipeline, and gas processing.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and data analysis.
• Experience leading monthly financial close and financial reporting activities.
• Public accounting experience is a plus.
• Comfortable working in a lean, entrepreneurial organization.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
• Proactive, self-motivated team player with a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude.
• Desire and demonstrated potential to grow into the Controller role.
