Job summary

Duke Energy Corporation in Indiana is seeking an Assistant Control Systems Technician to assist in verifying wiring diagrams, schematics and equipment layouts to meet engineering standards.

You will support high voltage testing, calibration and maintenance of meters, relays and data acquisition for the Energy Management System, while working with substation and generation teams. The position requires safety awareness and may involve travel within the region.

Qualifications

• Must have an Associate Degree in electrical or electronic engineering technology or other related degree.
• Must have satisfactorily passed entry-level tests.
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Assist in verification and correcting wiring diagrams, schematics, and equipment panel layouts to conform to engineering standards.
• Verify that equipment received and ordered is in accordance with engineering specifications and standards.
• Assist in servicing digital fault recorders, oscillographs, and related instruments; calibrate and test as needed.
• Assist in installations, calibration and maintenance of weather/environmental monitoring equipment and energy management devices.
• Assist in calculations of current, voltage, phase angle, impedance, power factor and capacitance using vector analysis.
• Assist in performing high voltage testing and tests near 10kV; participate in safety procedures.
• Assist in organization of substation and generating station data and databases; support EMS data acquisition systems.

Duties

Under indirect supervision, the Assistant Control Systems Technician will Assist in verification and correcting of wiring diagrams, schematics, and equipment panel layouts to conform to engineering standards. Assist in verification that equipment received and ordered is in accordance with engineering specifications and standards. Assist in servicing digital fault recorders, oscillographs, changing date/time stamp, installing and removing film, and operating necessary test switches to energize or deenergize oscillograph elements. Assist in proper labeling of various relays, transducers, test switches, switchgears, circuit breakers, transformers, and all associated equipment, during initial installations. Act as a safety person during high voltage testing. Assist in installing, testing, calibrating and maintaining weather and environmental monitoring equipment. Assist in installing, servicing, repairing and calibrating all types of meters, transducers, satellite communication and recording instruments associated with data acquisition for the Energy Management System. Assist in calculations involving current, voltage, phase angle, and impedance, power factor and capacitance using vector analysis and other various electrical concepts to perform these calculations. Assist in servicing energized equipment, including diagnosing the cause of faulty operations of solid state or Electro-mechanical voltage regulators, including voltage level control equipment on transformers equipped with automatic tap chargers. Assist in conducting overhaul tests on network and underground voltage transformers. Assist in the performance of high voltage testing, such as hi-potting and power factor testing, in which the employee is in close proximity to voltage exceeding 10kV. Assist in calibration and maintenance of system protective relays and test equipment, including the high voltage dielectric testing of various insulating oils. Assist in organization of substation and generating station data and various databases. Assist in acceptance tests on new or used substation and generation plant protective devices. Assist in installing, maintaining and repairing supervisory control, data acquisition, energy management, load control and remote alarming equipment, master and remote terminal units and associated transducers and sensing equipment. Assist in servicing and repairing computers, relays, electric and electronic subassemblies and test equipment. Assist in installing, inspecting, adjusting, maintaining and testing of line traps, tuning units, carrier and protective transfer trip equipment. Assist in installing, inspecting, testing, repairing, cleaning, calibrating, adjusting and maintaining electronic devices for other departments. Assist in installing, servicing, testing, calibrating and repairing electronic circuits, metering devices, recording equipment, data link equipment and other devices and equipment associated with the Energy Management System. Assist in installation, testing and repair of leased line, fiber optic, microwave, satellite radio and cellular communication systems and mediums used for supervisory control, telemetry, and system protection schemes. Work with extreme accuracy using specialized tools and test equipment for making precision adjustments on equipment.

Working Conditions

The Assistant Control Systems Technician works in an environment that includes adverse and extreme weather conditions, high voltage, high steam pressure, confined spaces, dirt and noise. The job requires climbing and working at various heights, lifting and carrying moderately heavy test equipment.
