Job summary

The City of New York Department of Buildings is seeking an Assistant Commissioner to oversee the Emergency Services division, ensuring rapid disaster response and coordinated communications across city agencies.

The role requires 4+ years in managing teams within large organizations and at least 18 months in administrative leadership. Remote work up to 2 days per week is possible under the program.

Qualifications

• Baccalaureate degree and four years of satisfactory emergency management, inspections of buildings construction, or related design/construction work.
• Minimum 18 months in administrative, managerial, executive, consultative or supervisory capacity.
• Candidates must have at least 4 years of operational experience managing teams in large, complex organizations.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the Emergency Services division and manage the Department’s Command Team for disaster response and emergency communications.
• Formulate and implement agency policies; develop division plans aligning with the Agency’s mission.
• Plan projects with schedules, costs, resources and responsibilities; allocate personnel and monitor progress.
• Coordinate with external agencies and stakeholders; prepare legally mandated reports on emergency services.
• Represent the Commissioner to internal and external partners and conduct outreach presentations on emergency services portfolio.
• On-call 24/7 and work nights/weekends/holidays as needed; brief senior management during incidents.
