Job description

Assistant Commercial Construction Superintendent
About The Role

Reporting to a Director of Construction and working directly with the project Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent will support the daily on‑site execution of commercial construction projects. The objective is to maintain safe and organized job sites, coordinate subcontractor activities, track project progress, and help identify and resolve field issues before they impact the project.

This is a field‑based developmental role for someone looking to build the technical knowledge and leadership skills required to independently manage commercial construction projects as a Superintendent. The Assistant Superintendent will work alongside experienced field leadership while taking increasing ownership of project responsibilities as experience and performance develop.

Job Type: Full‑time

Hours: Monday‑Friday, generally 6 AM‑3 PM, with potential variation based on project requirements, including occasional weekend or night work.

Primary Responsibilities
Onsite Subcontractor Coordination
  • Support the Superintendent in coordinating and directing daily subcontractor activities.
  • Monitor work in progress for compliance with project drawings, specifications, schedule, and quality expectations.
  • Coordinate upcoming work between trades and help identify conflicts before they impact field progress.
  • Communicate daily manpower, progress, and field conditions to the Superintendent and project management team.
  • Assist with site logistics, deliveries, material staging, and access coordination.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and professional jobsites in accordance with TPC standards.
  • Build productive working relationships with subcontractor foremen and field personnel while reinforcing project expectations.
Project Schedule Management
  • Assist the Superintendent in maintaining the overall construction schedule and developing short‑term look‑ahead schedules.
  • Track daily progress against scheduled activities and communicate potential delays or constraints.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors to confirm manpower, material availability, and readiness for upcoming work.
  • Help identify sequencing conflicts and other field conditions that could impact project milestones.
  • Take increasing ownership of defined project areas, phases, or scopes as experience develops.
Quality Control & Field Coordination
  • Review drawings and specifications to understand project requirements and upcoming work.
  • Perform regular field observations to verify work is being installed in accordance with the contract documents.
  • Identify potential construction conflicts, quality concerns, or incomplete work and communicate them to the Superintendent.
  • Assist in documenting potential RFIs and provide field information to support timely resolution.
  • Track corrective work and verify completion.
  • Participate in punch list development, completion, inspections, and project turnover.
Safety Promotion
  • Support the Superintendent in implementing and enforcing project‑specific safety requirements.
  • Monitor daily jobsite activities for compliance with company policies and applicable OSHA requirements.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and regular jobsite inspections.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and immediately communicate or address them with the appropriate project personnel.
  • Help maintain required safety documentation and jobsite postings.
  • Reinforce a jobsite culture where safe work practices, cleanliness, and accountability are expected from every subcontractor.

Safety should remain a meaningful part of this position rather than a secondary administrative responsibility because field supervision and subcontractor management are central to controlling jobsite risk.

Project Documentation & Communication
  • Maintain accurate daily reports documenting manpower, work activities, deliveries, site conditions, and project progress.
  • Take and organize progress photographs throughout construction.
  • Assist with maintaining current drawings and project information onsite.
  • Document field conditions and communicate relevant information to the Superintendent and project management team.
  • Participate in subcontractor coordination meetings and project meetings as required.
  • Communicate professionally with building management, occupants, clients, and other project stakeholders when working in occupied environments.
Preconstruction Assistance
  • Participate in preconstruction site walks and subcontractor walkthroughs when required.
  • Assist with the development of site logistics and project phasing plans.
  • Identify existing conditions, access limitations, and potential constructability issues that could impact execution.
  • Provide field input to the project management team during budgeting and project planning.
  • Assist with mobilization planning and jobsite setup before construction begins.
About You
  • 2‑5 years of commercial construction experience in an Assistant Superintendent, Field Engineer, Foreman, or similar field‑based role.
  • Working knowledge of commercial construction means, methods, sequencing, and trade coordination.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with subcontractors, project managers, and clients.
  • Organized and proactive, with the ability to identify issues and follow responsibilities through completion.
  • Willingness to learn from experienced field leadership while taking increasing ownership as capabilities develop.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam Revu, Procore, or similar construction management platforms.
  • Strong commitment to jobsite safety, quality, and professional standards.
  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Ability to travel between project sites as required.
