Job summary

Mansfield University seeks an Assistant Field Hockey Coach to support our NCAA Division II program, coordinating practices, games and travel under the Head Coach and directing day-to-day program operations. Responsibilities include recruiting within NCAA/PSAC/Mansfield rules, fundraising, equipment management and communication with staff, students and alumni.

Must have field hockey experience, a valid driver’s license, CPR/First Aid within six months; a bachelor’s degree and collegiate coaching

Qualifications

  • Previous Field Hockey playing or coaching experience and possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within six months of employment and must maintain certification during employment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct and organize all aspects of pre-season, in-season and post-season training, practices and games.
  • Recruit student‑athletes in compliance with NCAA, PSAC and Mansfield regulations.
  • Plan and participate in fundraising activities for the sport, including camps and clinics.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as equipment inventory, travel arrangements and game management.
  • Chart/report countable athletic activities (CARA).
  • Work with NCAA Clearinghouse to track student-athlete’s eligibility.
  • Track recruiting with the Compliance Assistant Internet program.
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Head Field Hockey Coach.

Position Summary Information
Position Purpose

The Assistant Field Hockey Coach assists in the overall organization, and administration of Mansfield University’s NCAA Division II Field Hockey Program. Duties may include (but are not limited to): recruiting student athletes within the rules and philosophy of the NCAA , PSAC and Mansfield; evaluating player talent – both academically and athletically; emphasizing academic priorities to student athletes; helping to organize/conduct all practices; scouting and providing appropriate strategy for competitive (game) success; related administrative tasks; assisting with fundraising initiatives; and maintaining appropriate communication with students, other coaches, university staff, parents, and alumni.

Description of Duties
  • To help plan, direct and organize all aspects of pre-season, in-season and post-season training, practices and games at the direction of the Head Coach.
  • To help direct and be involved in the recruitment of student‑athletes and to ensure that recruitment practices are consistent with all NCAA , PSAC and Mansfield regulations.
  • To plan and/or participate in fund‑raising activities associated with the sport of Field Hockey, including camps and clinics.
  • To assume responsibility for appropriate administrative tasks such as equipment inventory, travel arrangements and game management.
  • Chart/report countable related athletic activities ( CARA ).
  • Work with NCAA Clearinghouse to track student-athlete’s eligibility.
  • Track recruiting with the Compliance Assistant Internet program.
  • To assume other duties as assigned by the Head Field Hockey Coach.
Decision Making

Must be adept at problem‑solving; both in long‑range situations and immediate “game‑time” situations. Will refer all decisions to the Head Coach for implementation.

Fiscal Responsibility

Develops and monitors operating budget in cooperation with the Head Coach. Develops and administers NCAA Division II scholarship budget and monitors this with the Head Coach. Is responsible for helping the Head Coach with fundraising efforts and Alumni engagement activities. Stays within a budget for all recruiting trips and team related travel.

Supervisory Responsibility

Will provide some supervision to managers and student employees as well as student‑athletes by adhering to position responsibilities and team rules.

Minimum Requirements Profile

Previous Field Hockey playing or coaching experience and possession of a valid driver’s license.

Certification in CPR and First Aid within six months of the commencement of employment and must maintain certification during employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and previous collegiate Field Hockey coaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must be able to demonstrate an ability to be engaged in all aspects of an NCAA Division II Field Hockey program; must be able to work independently at times; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; demonstrated commitment to academic and athletic excellence; must have a general understanding of NCAA Division II rules and regulations and be committed to their implementation and observance. Candidates must be committed to a philosophy that emphasizes academic priorities for student athletes as well as the importance of good citizenship both on and off the field and must also demonstrate a commitment to diversity. Demonstration, through past accomplishments and behaviors, of the ability to support Mansfield’s principles and values of Character, Scholarship, Culture, Service and the strong student-centered vision and mission is required.
