Function / Position Summary

Position is responsible for assisting the head coach with the organization of the program. The role includes conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Organize and oversee specific program levels or areas of responsibility.
  • Work within the head coach's organizational structure.
  • Verify that all participants are fully registered and eligible.
  • Develop game schedules, practice schedules, facility use, transportation needs, and program budget.
  • Communicate and plan practice sessions and competition strategies to ensure the health and physical well‑being of the student participants.
  • Attend pre-season parent meetings for all sport levels to review scholastic eligibility, athletic code of conduct, team rules, injury prevention, and inherent risks.
  • Coordinate practice and competition schedules across off‑season, summer, and in‑season periods.
  • Assume responsibility for equipment inventory, selection, and care.
  • Maintain a safe facility and equipment and associated activities.
  • Maintain effective communication with athletes, school administration, staff, students, parents, and the community.
  • Build positive public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, fans, and local youth programs.
  • Establish cooperative relationships with students, parents, staff, and school administration.
  • Work with student athletes of varying abilities, socio‑economic, and cultural backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Handle stressful situations with composure and quick thinking.
  • Model and instill values of sportsmanship and fair play for all participants.
  • Monitor students' athletic and academic eligibility and collaborate with teachers and administration to prioritize academics.
  • Implement safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance.
  • Plan, organize, and implement safe and effective daily practices and events.
  • Supervise all students before, during, and after practices and contests.
  • Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the U-46 Athletic Code of Conduct and the U-46 Student Code of Conduct.
  • Collaborate with the head coach on fundraising activities and maintain accurate financial records per District policy.
  • Provide end‑of‑season individual and team records and statistics to the head coach.
  • Contribute to the program’s long‑term success by building relationships with local athletics organizations and K‑8 sports programs.
  • Attend Freshman Orientation and incoming 8th Grade Night, as applicable.
  • Perform additional duties/events assigned by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director.
Education
  • Certification with American Sport Education Program and/or valid Illinois teaching certificate.
  • Pass IHSA required tests and view required videos.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Experience / Knowledge
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for high‑school athletes.
  • Proven record of emphasizing sportsmanship, academic excellence, positivity, and character.
  • Knowledgeable in techniques and strategies specific to wrestling.
  • Professional handling of stressful situations.
  • Background or experience in coaching.
Physical Demands
  • Standing for extended periods and walking during practices.
  • Require visual, auditory, and manual dexterity to operate sports equipment.
  • Work in varied temperatures and weather conditions, including extreme high temperatures outdoors.
  • Lift equipment up to 50 pounds.
Terms of Employment
  • Reviewed annually by Athletic Director & Head Program Coach.
  • Employment determined by IHSA‑approved athletic calendar and school district policy.
  • Student opportunities may change or be modified to reflect environmental restrictions; positions and stipends will adjust accordingly.
  • ETA coaches retain the position without reapplying if satisfactory status is maintained.
  • Non‑ETA coaches must reapply each year as this is a one‑year position.
