Job summary

Thornton Fractional High School District 215 is seeking a part-time, seasonal athletic coach to support student participation in extracurricular and athletic opportunities. The role reports to the Principal and requires IHSA qualifications and strong interpersonal skills.

The coach assists with scheduling, transportation, and preparation for contests and practices, oversees equipment, ensures compliance with NFHS/IHSA/SSC rules, and contributes to season-end administration and budgeting.

Qualifications

  • Must meet IHSA qualifications to coach per IHSA Constitution and By-Laws.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to education and district values.
  • Experience as a coach in the activity sponsored preferred.
  • Experience working in a high school setting preferred.
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers requests through proper channels.
  • Assists the Head Coach in scheduling and providing transportation to contests and events.
  • Prepares for scheduled sport events or practices and coordinates with maintenance and school staff.
  • Distributes and collects documentation for athletic eligibility and approvals.
  • Distributes team rules and sport regulations to participants.
  • Provides supervision of athletes at practices, games and travel.
  • Directs student managers and statisticians for respective teams.
  • Completes paperwork on athletic injuries and submits to the athletic office.
  • Manages equipment inventory, distribution, collection and budgeting items.
  • Recommends budget items for next season and restricts athlete access to authorized areas.
  • Inspects facilities and reports issues to Head Coach/AD.
  • Instructs team on NFHS/IHSA/SSC rules and fundamentals.
  • Maintains records for team statistics and end-of-season awards.
  • Attends staff meetings and participates in scouting assignments.
  • Arrives early and stays late to support practices and events.
  • Assists in planning in-season conditioning and weightlifting programs.
  • Maintains professional conduct with players and staff.
  • Completes required safety trainings prior to the season and ongoing biannual trainings.

Job Duties
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all meetings that require attendance.
  • Assists the Head Coach in scheduling and providing transportation to contests, tournaments and other athletic events.
  • Assists the Head Coach in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and other school employees that may be involved.
  • Assists the Head Coach in the distribution and collection of documentation to fulfill state and school district requirements concerning physical examination, parental consent, insurance requirements and any other matters dealing with athletic eligibility.
  • Assists the Head Coach in distributing team rules, training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
  • Provides for proper supervision of athletes at all practices, games and while traveling.
  • Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
  • Completes paperwork, if necessary, on athletic injuries utilizing district approved forms and submits them to the athletic office on the next school day of attendance.
  • Is accountable to the Head Coach for all equipment issued to his/her team. Aids in the distribution, collection and storage of equipment. Assists the Head Coach in the collection of the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Submits to the Head Coach an annual end-of-season inventory as part of his/her final report.
  • Recommends to the Head Coach budgetary items for the next season in his/her area of the program.
  • Permits athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
  • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking the condition of the facility. Reports problematic conditions to the Head Coach and/or the Athletic Director in writing.
  • Assists the Head Coach in carrying out his/her responsibilities.
  • Instructs team members as to NFHS, IHSA and SSC rules and regulations of the sport and teaches fundamentals as outlined by the Head Coach.
  • Maintains a record for team statistics and requirements for end-of-season awards for both Head Coach and Athletic Director for his/her team.
  • Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the Head Coach of that sport.
  • Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the Head Coach.
  • Arrives early enough before practice, contests, and meetings to adequately prepare and remains long enough afterwards to help players with problems or to become involved in staff discussions.
  • Helps in the planning and implementation of in-season (only) conditioning and weightlifting programs.
  • Never criticizes, admonishes or argues with head coach or any staff member in the presence of players or parents.
  • Completes online concussion awareness training, first aid training, Automated External Defibrillator training, prior to the start of the season. Biannual training on anaphylactic reactions and asthma management. (Board Policy 5:100, 5:280)

Season of the athletic event; Stipend as provided by the negotiated Agreement

At the end of each athletic season based upon criteria as defined in the Negotiated Agreement and the District 215 Athletics/Activities Handbook.
