Burns & McDonnell in Minneapolis/St Paul, US, seeks an Assistant Civil/Transmission Engineer to support projects from concept through construction on 69–500 kV transmission lines. You will assist with design, drawings, and data collection under a licensed professional engineer.

The role covers basic civil/structural engineering concepts, CAD tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM, Civil 3D, PLS suite), and collaboration with project teams and clients.

Qualifications

  • ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 strongly preferred.
  • Internship/related consulting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the transmission line design from conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Assists with modifying and reviewing production drawings for high voltage (69-500kV) transmission lines.
  • Assists in designing transmission line components including plan/profile drawings, structure load diagrams and foundation drawings.
  • Applies basic knowledge of civil/structural engineering concepts within the industry.
  • Assists with research and compiles project related data.
  • Assists with compiling studies and reports.
  • Assists with updating drawings to verify corrections across CAD software.
  • Assists with client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration.

Description

The Assistant Civil/Transmission Engineer will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams to create world class designs for new projects, alterations and redevelopments on a variety of projects including underground and overhead high voltage transmission lines. The Assistant Civil/Transmission Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting transmission line plans according to budget constraints, design factors or client needs.

  • Assists in the transmission line design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Assists with modifying and reviewing production drawings for a variety of projects involving high voltage (69-500kV) transmission lines.
  • Assists in designing transmission line components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers including plan and profile drawings, structure load diagrams and foundation drawings.
  • Applies basic knowledge of commonly used civil and structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the civil/structural engineering services industry.
  • Assists with research and compiles project related data as required by the project managers.
  • Assists with compiling studies and reports.
  • Assists with correcting and updating drawings provided by senior engineers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD related software.
  • Assists with client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration for the design of high voltage transmission lines.
  • Assists in performing field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering or a related field from a recognized, accredited program. ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge in standard civil/structural engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Basic computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD), and civil/structural analysis programs.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
Compensation

$75,000.00-115,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
