Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
  • Four to six years of design and construction experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license with Wisconsin or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer-focused mindset and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares designs for concrete pavement construction to provide safe, efficient streets.
  • Prepares engineering designs of storm sewer projects with proper drainage and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepares designs for opening new streets to provide access to undeveloped land.
  • Prepares engineering designs for sanitary sewers to safely carry wastewater.
  • Advises and coaches subordinates on design work to ensure goals are met.
  • Organizes and participates in field work for data gathering and construction execution.
  • Responds to concerns from contractors and the public regarding city policies.
  • Prepares engineering reports and designs to ensure clear guidance for contractors.
  • Reviews and maintains competency to perform role-specific functions.
  • Regular attendance is required; other duties as assigned.

The City of Marshfield is seeking an Assistant City Engineer to help shape and maintain the community's infrastructure. This role contributes to all phases of project development, from research and design through construction oversight and regulatory approvals. This position also provides guidance and coaching to support successful project delivery.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares designs for concrete pavement construction to provide safe and efficient streets; determines elevation, width, and thickness of roadways.
  • Prepares engineering designs of storm sewer projects to carry surface water and storm water runoff to and from desired locations. Assures proper drainage and storm water quality is achieved, and satisfies requirements of regulatory agencies.
  • Prepares engineering designs for the opening of new streets to provide access to previously undeveloped land.
  • Prepares engineering designs for sanitary sewers to safely carry wastewater to treatment plant.
  • Advises and coaches subordinates on design work to ensure that goals are met.
  • Organizes and participates in field work related to data gathering and the execution of construction of various engineering projects to assure accurate and timely completion.
  • Responds to various concerns raised by contractors and the general public regarding city policies and department practices.
  • Prepares miscellaneous engineering reports and designs to ensure clear and concise work of contractors and city crews.
  • Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.
  • Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
  • Other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

  • Minimum Required: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum Required: Four to six years of design and construction experience required.
  • Preferred/Optional: 1 year of management experience preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

  • Minimum Required: Professional Engineer (PE) license with the State of Wisconsin, or the ability to obtain the license within one year of hire. A valid driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Requires strong interpersonal skills, customer service mentality, and problem solving ability utilized for both internal and external customers.

Annual Salary Range: $90,147.20 - $95,160.00
