Job summary

Schulte Hospitality Group is seeking an experienced Assistant Chief Engineer for Hyatt Place Buffalo/Amherst. You will work closely with the Chief Engineer to keep the property in top condition and act as the senior engineering presence when the Chief Engineer is absent.

The role requires strong troubleshooting across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry, plus leadership to guide maintenance staff and coordinate capital projects. Compensation ranges hourly with full-time benefits.

Qualifications

• Minimum three (3) years in hotel or commercial building maintenance; supervisory experience preferred.
• In-depth knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Chief Engineer to deliver preventive maintenance per brand standards (HVAC, laundry, ice machines, plumbing, fire safety).
• Direct daily work in Chief Engineer's absence and set priorities.
• Perform hands-on repairs across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and building systems.
• Manage work order system and track deficiencies through resolution.
• Coordinate and supervise contracted capital projects and coach maintenance staff.

THE ROLE

The Assistant Chief Engineer works directly alongside the Chief Engineer to keep the property running at its best, and serves as the senior engineering presence on property in the Chief Engineer's absence. This is a hands-on leadership role well suited to a strong technician who is ready to take on increasing responsibility and grow within the department.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Partners with the Chief Engineer to deliver the property's preventative maintenance program to brand standards, covering heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), laundry equipment, ice machines, plumbing, fire extinguishers and smoke alarms, and guest rooms
• Serves as the senior engineering presence on property in the Chief Engineer's absence, directing daily work and setting priorities
• Completes hands-on repairs across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and general building systems
• Manages the work order system: prioritizes, completes, and tracks orders in a timely manner and monitors all deficiencies through to resolution
• Conducts and documents preventative maintenance in guest rooms and inspects completed work
• Ensures swimming pool and spa maintenance is performed according to brand standards and health department regulations
• Maintains the hotel grounds, curb appeal, and building exteriors
• Maintains an accurate inventory of parts, tools, and supplies
• Assists in the coordination and supervision of contracted capital projects
• Helps coach, train, and support maintenance staff
• Assists other departments in fulfilling guest requests and resolving guest concerns
• Functions as a member of the emergency response team and maintains expertise in fire, safety, and life safety systems
• Participates in consistent, regularly scheduled property walk-throughs and reports or corrects identified deficiencies within an appropriate time
• Follows safe working practices and conditions at all times
• Performs various other duties as assigned to meet business objectives

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of high school education; post-high school, college, or trade school coursework in mechanical, electrical, or technical disciplines preferred
• Minimum of three (3) years in hotel or commercial building maintenance, with some lead or supervisory experience preferred
• In-depth working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general carpentry
• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification preferred, or willingness to obtain

• Strong troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude across multiple trades
• Leadership ability and readiness to take on increasing responsibility

• Microsoft Office skills (Word and Excel; Outlook a plus)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Prolonged periods standing and walking
• Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move as needed to reach, clean, and service machinery
• Must be able to visually inspect machines and systems
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

COMPENSATION

$26.50 to $31.50 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, hourly (non-exempt) position eligible for overtime in accordance with federal and New York State law.

Paid Time Off (PTO) is available for eligible associates in accordance with the Company's Paid Time Off policy. Specific compensation and benefit details will be discussed during the interview process.
