Job summary

Friona Industries LP is seeking an Assistant Cattle Manager to work closely with the Cattle Manager in our Kansas feedyard. You will oversee daily activities, supervise staff, and ensure cattle health and care are prioritized.

Under guidance of the Cattle Manager, you will delegate tasks, maintain proper documentation, and coordinate research-related activities among part-time employees. Strong leadership and cattle health knowledge are essential for this role.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required; experience preferred.
• CDL Class A license required within 60 days.
• Detail-oriented with ability to work independently or in a team.
• Experience with cattle processing programs including animal health and habits.
• Experience managing labor, feeding, herd health, and BQA.
• General computer knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and supervise daily cattle handling activities.
• Direct supervision of cattle handling crews and staff.
• Make discretionary decisions in the Cattle Manager’s absence.
• Identify cattle by quality, health or risk status.
• Apply knowledge of cattle nutrition and health to operations.
• Sort and order cattle per manager’s specifications.
• Record receipts and documentation for cattle.
• Schedule and coordinate feedyard staff and activities.
• Maintain health care supplies and medicine inventories.
• Maintain facilities and equipment used for cattle care.
• Oversee cattle sorting and classification.
• Maintain inventory of cattle in pens (home, hospital).
• Support safe movements of cattle across the feedyard.
• Approve shipments and clearance reports for pens to be shipped.
• Maintain an efficient feedyard schedule.
• Enforce safety policies and procedures.

Job description

The Assistant Cattle Manager will work closely with the Cattle Manager to prioritize and delegate feedyard work requirements.

The Assistant Cattle Manager, under the guidance of the Cattle Manager, will direct, supervise and coordinate daily activities at the Feedyard including employee supervision, posting research data, maintaining herd health programs and coordinating daily work and research activities of part-time employees.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Maintain communication with cattle manager regarding cattle handling and care
• Support, coordinate and direct supervision of all cattle handling crews
• Perform discretionary decisions in the Cattle Manager’s absence
• Distinguish and identify cattle as to quality, health, or at risk
• Aware of cattle nutritional and health knowledge
• Sort and order cattle per manager’s specifications and requirements
• Receiving or rejection of cattle
• Perform proper documentation of all cattle received
• Help schedule and place all feedyard staff and coordinate their activities
• Assist with maintaining proper health care supplies
• Establish proper cattle care crews
• Perform maintenance of all cattle care facilities
• Manage cattle sorting and classification
• Maintain accurate inventory of cattle in home pens, hospital pens, etc.
• Manage maintenance of medicine inventories
• Facilitate movements of cattle across the feedyard
• Run or approve any clearance reports on all pens to be shipped
• Structure and maintain an efficient feedyard schedule
• Manage and support a continual observance and enforcement of safety policies and procedures

Qualifications and Skills

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Class A CDL license (or must be able to obtain within 60 days)
• Detailed oriented to provide accurate and consistent work
• Work independently and as a team member
• Knowledge of feedyard cattle processing programs including animal health and habits
• Experience in managing employee labor, feeding, herd health, & BQA
• General computer knowledge

Special Conditions / Requirements:

• Operating computerized machinery
• Livestock accidents, moving machinery, contaminated medical equipment, vehicular and livestock traffic

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

• Heavy lifting, walking, long-term standing, climbing equipment
• Constantly works in outdoor weather conditions
• Must be able to lift 50+ pounds regularly
