Job description

Assists in overseeing and performing commercial and residential building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing inspection activities within the Town. Manages building inspections and verifies zoning and sign regulation within the Town.

  1. Enforces building codes and zoning ordinances of the Town.
  2. Checks routine plans and specifications for new building construction, alterations, and repairs for compliance with ordinances and regulations.
  3. Inspects buildings and similar structures that are being constructed, altered, moved, or demolished for compliance with related codes and ordinances.
  4. Determines buildings and structures are constructed in a safe manner in accordance with approved plans and specifications.
  5. Inspects quality of materials and methods of construction for footings, foundations, excavations, wood framing, concrete work, steel erection, latching, plastering, tile work, masonry, plumbing, electrical installations, and other construction work.
  6. Furnishes information to the public (citizens, builders, developers, and contractors) regarding the requirements of building codes and zoning ordinances.
  7. Requires corrections be made when deficiencies exist and may assist builders and owners in determining how corrections are to be made to ensure conformance.
  8. Maintains records of permits applied for and issued and work performed.
  9. Recommends condemnation when building construction is found to be dangerous, unsafe or defective.
  10. Adheres to personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  11. Informs supervisor of all work-related activities.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  2. Must have a valid state issued driver’s license and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
EDUCATION:
  1. A State of Texas Plumbing Inspector’s License is required.
  2. Requirement of five ICC (International Code Council) certifications, including a Certified Building Inspector, Certified Electrical Inspector, Certified Mechanical Inspector, and Certified Plumbing Inspector along with one additional ICC Inspector certification.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
  1. A minimum of seven years commercial and residential building inspection work experience (municipal, preferred) is required.
  2. Supervisory experience is required.
Desired Qualifications:
  1. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  1. Must have an extensive working knowledge of residential and commercial building construction, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems.
  2. Must have excellent communicative skills, oral and written; supervisory; and organizational skills.
  3. Must work well under pressure and stress; deal effectively and efficiently, in a pleasant manner, with distraught and upset citizens; and work extensive hours, as needed.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  1. To perform the essential functions of the job must be able to see, hear and work in adverse environmental conditions.
  2. Must be able to climb, kneel, crawl, walk, stoop, bend, twist, lift, push and pull up to 50 lbs. of equipment or material.
