Job description

Responsible for development, implementation, management, coordination, and evaluation of assigned system-wide functions to meet the needs of the community. Provides a variety of professional library services including reference, reader’s advisory, programs and selection of library materials to meet the needs of library customers. Responsible for managing the services and operation of the branch in the absence of the Branch Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

DUTIES
  • Manages daily operations of assigned staff, projects, and/or work units. Interviews, selects, supervises, trains and develops, counsels, and if necessary, disciplines direct report personnel according to established City of Denton policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Resolves customer and employee concerns in the absence of the Branch Manager.
  • Manages daily operations of the branch makerspace, including inventory, budget, oversight of services and technology offered, staff training, programming recommendations, marketing, data collection, and serving patrons in the makerspace.
  • Proactively greets and assists library customers in all areas of the library (desk, roving, e-mail, phone, or additional methods of communication); assists by providing reader’s advisory services, reference, library technology, library policies, directional, and patron account assistance.
  • Analyzes and evaluates data for planning effective services, participating in strategic and long-range planning and goal setting for the division and department; assists with fulfilling goals and achieving benchmarks in accordance with the library strategic plan and priorities.
  • Informs department leadership of potential impacts to services as well as matters of non‑compliance with department and City policies and procedures
  • Directs the work of the library professionals and other library employees assigned to the branch
  • Reviews and evaluates assigned areas of the collection, performing collection maintenance, weeding, and recommending subjects or titles for selection.
  • Monitors assigned budget areas for the division
  • Makes formal presentations or speaks to community groups and participates in library outreach.
SUPERVISORY/BUDGETRESPONSIBILITIES
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff; recommend assignment/assignment change, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor budget; maintain accurate budget reporting; ensure that operations are cost‑effective, and funds are managed wisely.

EDUCATION,EXPERIENCE,AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
  • Master’s Degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university in Library Science or related field; and,
  • Four (4) years’ experience in a public library or related field; and,
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a management or supervisory capacity;

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification.
SAFETY
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition; perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment, as appropriate and/or notify leadership immediately of needed repairs.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and/or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to leadership.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.
  • Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting: Lifting no more than 20 pounds and carrying up to 10 pounds.
  • Environment: Works in an office setting with exposure to humidity, noise, dust, no/low light, confined spaces, mold, chemicals, and odors; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Travel: Travel to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to work after normal business hours, nights, holidays, and weekends, as needed. Must be able to work overtime, as needed. Must attend regularly scheduled and special meetings.
