Job summary

The Office of the West Virginia Attorney General seeks a qualified full-time attorney to represent state agencies in the Health and Human Services Division in the greater Eastern Panhandle, covering Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire, Mineral, Grant, Pendleton, Tucker, and Randolph counties.

The attorney will litigate in federal, state, and administrative courts and may file appellate briefs and motions before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals and the Intermediate Court of Appeals.

Qualifications

• Experience litigating in federal, state, and administrative courts.
• Strong written and oral advocacy skills required.
• Ability to manage multi-county caseloads across ten counties.

Responsibilities

Job description

The Office of the West Virginia Attorney General seeks a qualified full-time attorney to represent state agencies in our Health and Human Services Division in the greater Eastern Panhandle which includes counties Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire, Mineral, Grant, Pendleton, Tucker, and Randolph. The attorney must work closely with the client agency to litigate matters in federal, state, and administrative courts. Additional work may include filing appellate briefs, extraordinary writs, and motions before the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia and the Intermediate Court of Appeals of West Virginia. The attorney must participate in oral arguments before those courts. Additional work may be assigned as needed. The best candidates will have litigation experience, strong written and oral advocacy skills, and an ability to manage caseloads across ten counties. Some travel for court appearances and oral arguments is required.

The position is located in the Department of Humans Services office in Martinsburg, WV; however, other locations in the greater eastern panhandle will be considered if it is feasible. Candidates must have an active WV license or be eligible for admission.
