Department of Translational Neuroscience

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) established in 1891 as the first academic medical center in Texas, and offers a vibrant supportive environment for scientific discovery, comprising schools of medicine, nursing, health professions, public and population health, and graduate biomedical sciences, six hospitals, and close to 100 outpatient clinics. The Department of Translational Neuroscience at UTMB aims to advance knowledge about nervous system functions and diseases particularly in areas such as chronic pain, neurotrauma, neuroinfectious diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and brain health through collaborative research. Our department is committed to innovative translational research, spanning the spectrum from genes and molecules to systems and human conditions through existing expertise and collaborations. Our department provides access to state-of-the-art facilities and supports faculty development. You'll benefit from rich scientific interactions through UTMB's centers and institutes, notably the Moody Brain Health Institute, Sealy Institute for Drug Discovery, Galveston National Laboratory, Institute for Translational Sciences home of UTMB's Clinical and Translational Science Award, and several clinical departments as well as participation in the Gulf Coast Consortia. The planned new Translational Pain Research and Intervention Center provides additional opportunities for growth and development. We also have a track record of excellence in interdisciplinary education of graduate, medical, and post-doctoral trainees. The Neuroscience Graduate Program based in the department is the first PhD program in neuroscience in Texas.

Opportunities

The Department of Translational Neuroscience in the John Sealy School of Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) invites applications for several tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant and/or Associate Professor levels. We are seeking innovative scientists to join our team and advance neuroscience research and its clinical applications.

  • Microbiome and Gut-Brain Axis: Research on gut-brain connections in neurological function/disease.
  • Bioinformatics and Multiomics: Analysis of large-scale biological data such as transcriptomics for neurological insights into disease mechanisms and targets.
  • Biomarkers and Human Tissues and Samples: Utilizing human samples for biomarker identification, disease mechanisms, and translational research.

Successful candidates will establish extramurally funded research programs, contribute to our educational mission, and engage in collaborative initiatives across UTMB.

Candidate Requirements
  • PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in neuroscience or a related field.
  • Strong record of research accomplishments and publications.
  • Independent extramural funding.
  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring.
