Job Description

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at theMissouri University of Science and Technology (S&T) in Rolla,Missouri is seeking outstanding applicants for a non-tenure-track(NTT) teaching faculty position at the assistant/associateprofessor rank. NTT teaching faculty members contribute to the coreactivity of teaching and are fully engaged in the department’scurriculum development and growth through service activities. Thesuccessful candidate will provide high-quality teaching at theundergraduate level across a range of fundamental mechanical andaerospace engineering courses. Preference will be given tocandidates with teaching strength and interest in eitherthermo-fluids & heat transfer or instrumentation &controls. However, the successful candidate will need to teachother fundamental courses in the mechanical or aerospaceundergraduate curricula.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate their ability tosuccessfully develop, organize, and deliver lecture-baseduniversity-level instruction in mechanical engineering with a focuson one or more of; thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer,controls, or instrumentation. Broad teaching strength in otherfundamental areas of mechanical engineering is desirable. Thenominal teaching workload is three to four courses per semester(i.e., six to eight courses per academic year is expected). Typicalcourse size is 40-80 students.

NTT teaching faculty at Missouri S&T start at the rank ofAssistant Teaching Professor, and are eligible for promotion toAssociate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor. This is anopen-rank position announcement, and faculty will be hired at thelevel commensurate with their qualifications and experience. It isanticipated that the successful candidate will achieve a sustainedlevel of recognition by students and peers as a stimulating,inspiring and effective teacher, with a demonstrated excellence inthe production of effective learning materials and teachingtechniques. Additionally, service activities could include designteam advising, academic advising, curriculum development, programassessment, or committee engagement.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering (or a closely related field) andan ABET/EAC accredited undergraduate degree in engineering, orequivalent, is required for this position. Successful priorteaching experience will be an important consideration. Superiorcommunication and interpersonal skills and the ability to motivateand inspire students are also required attributes. ProfessionalEngineering licensure is considered a positive for the applicant,although not required.
